Rousimar Palhares: (through his interpreter and manager Alex Davis)

"I had no intention to hurt Tomasz. I never have; I am not like that."

"Unfortunately, there have been cases in the past where guys have tapped and then said they hadn't tapped. This happened in a match in the UFC between my trainer, Murilo Bustamante, and Matt Lindland. Our attitude is to hold the position until the ref interrupts to avoid this happening to us again."

"I did not think the suspension was fair. I did not have any intent of hurting Drwal. It was in the heat of battle, and I wanted to make sure I did not lose the position. I was just waiting for the ref to interrupt the match."

Palhares' manager, Alex Davis, a former top grappler himself:

"Rousimar is a humble, simple guy. There's not an ounce of maliciousness in him. That was the first minute of the fight, the adrenaline was high, he got the position, and wanted to make sure he finished. Maybe he held on a tad longer than he needed to, but, like I said, that's an intense moment. This is MMA – the most intense form of fighting on the planet, and the other guy wants to punch your face in. I think the referee was just a little too far away."

"Rousimar is freakish strong, and he had that position locked in. To make Rousimar into a dirty fighter over this is totally unfair; he is not. Rousimar will be back subbing guys shortly."

he got suspended? what a joke.

Let go then the ref says let go.

It's only 90 days. Just enough time to have him ready for his next fight.

I hope he blows out both knees while training

Refs need a whistle to stop fights

"MMAjunkie.com has learned that initial X-rays revealed no fractures in Drwal's knee or leg."

doesn't really seem like good news yet....x-rays do not show soft tissue damage which is what you would expect to be injured with a heel hook.

Good thing he wasn't fined, but he still got fucked over for the sub of the night bonus and then judged by what amounts to a kangaroo court. In the interest of "fairness", is Pellegrino also going to get suspended for spiking Camoes?

My roots are actually with BTT. That said, I don't agree with holding onto the submissions. Take the suspension, learn from it and don't let it happen again.

you guys are right he didn't hold it on for long at all ...he was too busy still cranking the shit out of it! disgusting

pc mma. oh man

32Hunter -
yes, I read about this before seeing the Gif. After seeing it he didn't hold on that long the ref gets there and he lets go as soon as the ref grabs him.

Maybe we didnt watch the same fight/gif... because it clearly shows the ref tugging THREE times at Palhares arm to try and break the hold. Three times is unacceptable. Palhares looked rabid before and after the fight, that doesnt help when he is accused of holding a sub too long.

From the gif above you can see he lets go after the ref tries to pry him off three times. And that's why he got suspended, lost the sub of the night and so on. It was a dumb thing for him to do (assuming he wasn't malicious), and totally avoidable. Next time all he has to do is let go when he's told to let go.

Don't they have the instant replay? He could have at least loosend up man. The ref was on his way no need to keep twisting it!

When the ref has to DEADLIFT three times to pull you off the sub, you deserve longer than a 3 month suspension.

I thought it was fine. I've seen much worse things go unpunished in the UFC. The referee stops the fight not the fighter tapping and he let go in a reasonable time after the referee intervened

Any update on the knee?

I think it's a double standard and don't agree with the suspension. Rousimar held on for around a second too long after the ref got to him. If one of UFC's poster boy's had done the same thing, he would got sub of the night.

Wes_Mantooth - I hope the UFC cuts him.

I hope he gets a fight ASAP after the suspension.

He beat a tough guy in Drwal in under a minute. He's a much needed commodity in the weak MW class.

I was pissed when I seen it on the PPV. I agree on holding it until the ref calls it but when the ref clearly has to pry you off the submission you're being a first class dick (especially when executing a submission that causes significant damage as opposed to a choke).

Karma has a weird, wonderful way of working things out though...
