He was arching the elbows, so they weren't illegal strikes. And no, most of them were hitting the side of the head. Pe De Pano beat Mir fairly and squarely.
Its my understanding that you can use the point of the elbow in a backwards strike as long as you are not bringing it directly towards the opponent in a straight line ala Gary Goodridge via crucifix destruction.
It has to arc a little. I must admit though its one of the more subjective rules.

Ok I was as disappointed as the next guy that Mir lost but it was a fair fight and anyone saying differently is just trying to deny the obvious.
He won and no excuses .
