I don't think you understand what the purpose of not eating it, or food in general, on a certain day/days are meant for.
It's probably safe to say that the majority of people practice this out of tradition over an actual belief.

Nobody follows what they're supposed to do 100%. It's a joke and mainly why I have an issue with religion. They are so concerned about gays and abortion they end of ignoring the most important parts.
Even better is the "Sin is Sin" discussion that I always like to follow up with. I'm told that stealing a cracker is just as sinful as murder. Hence the phrase "Sin is Sin" and the fact the bible doesn't weigh Sin. I doubt that if there is a "Heaven" that a single Christian is there. How could they be? You can't say that "God will over look it because I led a good life". So do atheists but Christians are sure we won't be let in. Nowhere does it say if you live a good life then thats good enough. Infact the bible says the opposite, especially the OT.
Let's not pick on just Christians. Muslims and Jews do the same shit. It's almost comical in the sense they're so aggressive in their views yet their own actions go against their views. I have stated many times my cousin is an Orthadox jew who does the same shit every Friday. "The good book says we can't use anything modern, however if the device is already on, we don't turn it off.". So what does he do every Friday? Turns everything on before sun down.
Even the most extreme in every religion doesn't do what they're supposed to. There's a video of ISIS members fucking a donkey. They by far get the "Most extreme" award in regards to their faith but WTF? How can you be that aggressive and then go fuck a donkey, which i'm sure is against some Islamic law.
Everyone is religious until it's no longer easy to do so. Which I thought was the point in the first place but apparently not.
Reading anyone's opinion or written word about any subject will always be interpreted in different ways. Why give a fuck how someone interpreted something that's doesn't affect you on a personal level. Just my opinion take what you want from it, i won't judge. 
I guess what OP is trying to say is don't be a hypocrite and adhere only to some rules while completely ignoring the others that are at least equally important. I see that a lot in Europe as well, even with catholics who should be all pro Roman Church. I also believe that kind of behaviour is sect like and actually a heresy. If Church were stronger that sort of behaviour would not be tolerated, but present day catholic Church is weak so they let it pass. I am an atheist by the way, but I know my Church history (and that is way different than religious history)
