Man, I didn't realize just how brutally he beat down Hurtado after the guy was clearly unconscious and defenseless, propped up by the ropes. He landed ten - yes, TEN - absolutely savage head shots, and showed no inclination to stop hadn't the ropes mercifully given way. I'll post a video if I find it.
dont remember watching it...Where was the ref its his job to stop that from happening
ttt
Thanks
" Blame the ref for not stopping it, not the fighter for continuing to fight."
He has to take some blame - should've realized the ref was totally incompetant at a certain point
That's a slow motion replay. He landed a lot of unanswered punches but that seems a lot longer than it was at real time. Should have been stopped sooner anyway but it wasn't as bad as the slow motion made it appear to be.
So is he supposed to quit fighting, let his opponent recover and come back to beat his ass? Come on.
Fighters are conditioned to make the most out of their chances.
Its the refs or corners job to stop fights.
That said,I woulda stopped hitting the guy way before that.

sometimes there is a line where u can say .."i won" no need for overkill...i have seen mma fighters (few) actually stop or slow down and look at the ref or tell the ref " i think he is hurt or ko'd" ...most times its not about beating the crap outta someone.
lets say i was fighting and i CLEARLY had the guy not defending himself after about 3 punches in the head and he doesnt respond and looks "out of it" iam not going to barrage 10 more strikes on top of it
not a lot of room for hesitation in the fight game IMO
Ref's fault.

knockdown should have been called as soon as the stupid ref realizes the only thing holding the man up is the ropes.

Gotta blame the ref or Hurtado's cornermen long before you blame Whitaker.
His corner and the ref didn't feel the need to stop it, so I dont think you can blame one of the guys in middle of the fight. He wasn't down so what do you want him to do?
Totally agree p4p
refs fault, cant blame Whitaker.
He is down on the scorecards in a championship fight and needs a knockout.
Try to remmber that this is boxing and not MMA, if the ref doesnt stop it the guy gets up to 10 seconds to try to get his shit together, if you have a chance to close the show you take it.
Ray Mercer had a similar situation once and when they asked him about it after he said something to the effect of I give no man a second chance.
You would honestly be hard pressed to find a fighter that would have stopped in that situation.

He didn't go down cause the ropes were holding him up. That first punch would have dropped him like a sack of potatoes if it would have been in the center of the ring.
