A lightweight meeting pitting Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon has been agreed to for UFC 144 in Japan, MMA Fighting has learned.

The UFC confirmed the matchup to MMA Fighting's Ben Fowlkes on Tuesday.

The matchup had previously been rumored, with a possible date in Las Vegas. Instead, it will go international.

The fight should prove to be a high-octane battle between two of the division's most offensive-minded fighters.

 I've been saying for years that every card with a title fight should have the #1 contender fight on the same card, so we know right away who will be fighting; they can have them faceoff or whatever in the ring if they need to manufacture some drama. This also guarantees at least two very high quality fights on the card.



Don't think this is a #1 contender match though. Lauzon doesn't have the wins yet and neither does Pettis. 



I imagine by the time Edgar/Henderson is settled, Melendez will be in the UFC.

If henderderson wins , pettis will beat him, he looki ready for anybody, he told me he was too confident and thats why he lost to guida

Both the Japan and Brazil cards are looking amazing! He beat Melvin and took all his wins so if he beats Pettis who was already supposed to get a title shot then Joe should get it. Melvin won 9/10 so he would of beaten 2 guys who were due title shots. people get title shots for a lot less then that. This will be another easy 1st rd win for Lauzon people will be shocked again.

 i'd have to agree with idsmashit, easy W for Joe, and the after he dismantles pettis, they will have to give him the nod for the title shot

I love Joe as much as everyone else, but to say it's an "easy win" is ridiculous.

If Pettis were a UG regular, these posts above me would be a lot different.

I got Showtime by UD, this kid is the real deal.
