                    <blockquote>

"The UFC released me just as they got on SPIKE. I think if people had seen me, seen fights like the one with Minowa, I would be a really popular and big name fighter," Baroni told Bloody Elbow in an exclusive interview. "But unfortunately I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time. When PRIDE was at its best, I was in the UFC. When the UFC blew up and PRIDE was crumbling, guess where I was? I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"I remember hitting him (former middleweight champion Dave Menne)  with a right hand and seeing him stagger against the cage. I remember thinking that was my opportunity - that I could be somebody in this sport ...  I just let my hands go and unleashed all the power and speed I had on him. To get what I wanted so bad. To be somebody."

"I go back with those guys a long time. I don't get to talk to them as much anymore because they are busy, traveling around the world and doing great things. Joe Silva was my good friend. I'd drive him around because he didn't have a car. We'd go to find him comic books and he'd take me out to lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. It was cool. I'd go to Joe's office and watch tapes and it was like a soundtrack to the world. Back then the tapes were in different languages. We'd watch fights from Brazil and they'd be in Portuguese. We'd watch fights from Japan like Pancrase and SHOOTO and it was cool. I got to be real tight with those guys. Dana, when I tore my back and was out for almost a year, he took me to Hawaii for the first time. Those guys were good to me. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to win for them and it's a business. But I plan on winning now and getting back into the Zuffa family. I got to know these guys back then when they started and I'm proud of them. I want to be a part of what they are doing today."

GO PHIL!
I would watch NYBA fight every week!
WIN NOW!

?

I remember that so well. The fight with Suloev was also a good one.

It always seemed to me thy phil got no love (maybe because I was on sherdog forums) and on here he gets all the respect he deserves. Phil is a great fighter. Phone Post

All he's gotta do...Is do what he did in that gif...And he's part of the family again for as long as he can keep doing that.

Go motherfucken Phil Baroni!!

I used to hate on old Baroni before he started letting his heart show.

I don't know, that bodybuilder lifestyle video, just sayin.

That was a good interview.

Baroni has had some great fights and certainly generated alot of interest back in the day.

Hope he gets back on track.

Mad respect again to the NYBA.  Great interview.

Damn will this dude STFU please? When is the last time he was relevant? 2002??? Frank Shamrock beat his ass while chewing bubble gum and waving at folks in the crowd and then Diaz did the same to Frank! Go pose for more pics Phoney Baroni I think I here the photographer calling you!

Go motherfucken Phil Baroni!!
Manhattan !

I find it really sad that Baroni doesn't have the skillset to be at the top but seems to want it so badly. It's hard to not root for him but every fight just seems to be a foregone conclusion. Dana keeps wanting to make Phil part of the family but if he doesn't win it's hard to know what to do with him.

He deserves a place in the sun even if it's not being a fighter for Zuffa.

That was a fucking great interview. I'll always look forward to watching Phil Baroni fight. Glad to see you back in action dude.

I agree with Eikon....I just like watching that guy fight....

best of luck, Phil

Always been a fan of the man. Hope he can make it back into the roster! Great fighter.

I've always wondered why Baroni didn't do more commentating, he was good at it.  He did some for UFC and later Pride and he was surpisingly observant and articulate. I remember in ROTR he used to describe the positions and holds in freestyle wrestling terms which was really interesting since most commentators describe things from a BJJ perspective.
