I want to learn about sucessful elite level jodoka that primarily win by the use of pick-ups, and wrestling type takedowns over the more traditional throws. I know this style of judo is more prominent with Eastern European competitors, but I just want to learn about any sucessful judoka that employ these type throws. Being a wrestler first, I prefer this style of judo over the more traditional type throws, and have had sucess in competition with this style of judo. From what I have learned, many judoka in the US are just to stubborn to learn to adapt these hybrid type techniques, so when I face them in shai or randori, I am always told that I am not "playing fair".
khabarelli always pops up in my head first. a lot of judoka from georgia were great at pick ups.
There is also the books Pickups by van De Walle and Russian Judo by Iaskevitch.
You can get those books at
Nothing "unfair" about doing pickups in class.
Now if your are breaking the gripping rules by holding non-standard grips or you can't control what you are trying to do and are hurting people - then you might need to rethink what you are doing in class.
JM
it isnt the type of throws that matter, IMHO. i dont care if it is a seionage or kataguruma.. the key isnt what throws do you use, not by a long shot. its how you set them up. among the very best players who do pick-ups you will notice that they set the throws up in very similar fashion (movement wise) as the japanese.. the only differences being hand placement and posture.
