I got a beretta 92fs, shoots great super reliable it's a little big to carry but at home that's my go to if something goes down.
slm181 -esssee - yeah there seems to be ton of options out there. the ones i listed were the ones i liked after trying out a few. except for the p320 that is, haven't had a chance to try that. kind of leaning towards the sig at this point.Definitely recommend sig.
thanks for all the feedback.
A lot of people will prob tell you to get a glock, but comparing glock to sig is like comparing Honda to Mercedes.
P226 is an excellent choice for home protection and carry and the one I would recommend.
The difference between that and the P320 is striker fire vs hammer, and quality (P226 is higher end).
I personally prefer a double action hammer vs striker fire. No need to rack the slide, just squeeze the trigger.
On the other side, the 320 is a modular platform, so you can easily retrofit and modify. Also cheaper and maybe a bit easier to maintain.
Sig also makes a great 1911. Recently got the sig 1911 extreme and its my favorite gun to shoot. They are a bit more difficult to take apart and clean, but if you're not an idiot, it's no problem and you'll have it down after 1 or 2 field strips.
The thing people will complain a lot about with the 1911 is round capacity, but if you need more than 8 rounds of .45 auto to dispatch a threat, you're doing it wrong and probably shouldn't have a pistol. As far as accuracy, they are outstanding (sig 1911s at least) and among the most accurate handguns I've shot (and I've shot a lot).
No need to rack the slide? So just insert mag and go bang bang?
esssee - Yeah, I'm in cali so no STI. It was actually one of the first ones I was looking at. Legion too I think.
Legion is not on the roster. Neither is the HK VP series, nor a lot of the handguns people are recommending. You can get them via PPT (private party transfer), but you'll be paying sometimes double MSRP or more. Before seriously considering anything, go here:
And see if it's available in Commiefornia. If it's not, and you don't have unlimited funds to get an off-roster pistol via PPT, don't bother considering it. You'll save yourself a lot of grief and headache.

thanks for the link, willing to spend for something i like but wouldn't want to pay extra through a private party. there's too many good options for me to do that, especially as a beginner. beginning to feel like this might not be my last purchase.

That itch will come back. Over and over. Just make sure you do your due dilligence by handling a few, and shooting the ones you like, at a range first.
Depending on where in CA you are, there'a few local dealers in SoCal I can highly recommend who will give you better prices than the dorks at Turner's, who usually set the basement for prices.
I like to say everyone's first handgun should be a revolver.

haha I was actually planning on going to Turners this weekend but after reading through the posts i think i might go shoot them again before making a decision. if you can recommend anyone that'd be great!
oh yeah im in the San Gabriel Valley, near Pasadena
Glock. It's ready to rock right out of the box. Put some good night sights on it and it will be dependable forever

2AZone. Jaime is the best, and their prices 90% of the time beat Turners. They're in Rancho Cucamonga, and I know that's a bit of a drive, but you're supporting the little guy and also fuck Turners. There's also OC Armory, and Alamo in West Covina, but I go 2A first for everything.

Yes and no. I just read on Calguns how a a guys range queen, 1st gen Glock 17, cracked a frame rail. You don't hear that very much from the polymer pistols, but virtually never on a steel framed pistol.
I'm not poo-pooing plastic pistols, I own more of those than steel, but a blanket statement like that in and of itself isn't true.
Glock 19 has a proven track record. The new gen 5s haven't changed much other than removing the finger grooves which you'd manually have to do with a sander and an ambidextrous slide stop. Which for us lefties is great (if you want to buy a brand new gun). You can find parts for them easily and spare magazines are so much cheaper.
awesome, thanks b.d. i'll be checking out 2AZone sometime soon and let you know how it goes.
If your budget allows you a P226, then get it. You will NOT regret it.
You will never think "man I wish I had a shitty brick shaped Glock right now" when shooting it...
Didn't read. Glock 19.
If the Glock 19 is a Honda Civic, then the P226 is a BMW M3. They shoot similar, but one is much higher quality, and well made...
For a home defense pistol I would insist on:
- a reliable pistol (no more than 1 failure every 5,000 rounds period)
- multiple, reliable magazines for a semi-auto
- multiple, reliable reloaders for a revolver
- high quality defensive ammunition (this will NOT be cheap)
- a quality, quick access safe
I would strongly consider:
- a weapon mounted light (this is "in addition to" not "a replacement for" a flashlight)
- as much training (and training ammo) as you can afford
- a concealed carry license

A Sig is definitely a step up from a Glock, build-wise. Tough to beat the feel of a good steel framed pistol in your hands. There's also something to be said for getting a reliable pistol at half the price and spending the other 4-500 bucks on ammo and range time.
In the end he could hate the feel of the Glock, or just not like the Sig. He might hate them both and go with my favorite, HK. All the cost and quality of the Sig with the build materials of the Glock!
=)
For later..

Are you 90?
