Houston OBGYN Dr. Tamika Cross is blowing up Facebook with a maddening story of prejudice that's sure to make you grit your teeth in frustration. Dr. Cross was flying out of Detroit on a Delta flight when a man became unresponsive. She jumped in to help save him, only to find herself restrained by the flight crew, who were extremely skeptical that a black woman who had ever set foot in Detroit could be an M.D.
I'm sure many of my fellow young, corporate America working women of color can all understand my frustration when I say...
I'm sure many of my fellow young, corporate America working women of color can all understand my frustration when I say I'm sick of being disrespected.
Was on Delta flight DL945 and someone 2 rows in front of me was screaming for help. Her husband was unresponsive. I naturally jumped into Doctor mode as no one else was getting up. Unbuckle my seatbelt and throw my tray table up and as I'm about to stand up, flight attendant says "everyone stay calm, it's just a night terror, he is alright". I continue to watch the scene closely.
A couple mins later he is unresponsive again and the flight attendant yells "call overhead for a physician on board". I raised my hand to grab her attention. She said to me "oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you" I tried to inform her that I was a physician but I was continually cut off by condescending remarks.
Then overhead they paged "any physician on board please press your button". I stare at her as I go to press my button. She said "oh wow you're an actual physician?" I reply yes. She said "let me see your credentials. What type of Doctor are you? Where do you work? Why were you in Detroit?" (Please remember this man is still in need of help and she is blocking my row from even standing up while Bombarding me with questions).
I respond "OBGYN, work in Houston, in Detroit for a wedding, but believe it or not they DO HAVE doctors in Detroit. Now excuse me so I can help the man in need". Another "seasoned" white male approaches the row and says he is a physician as well. She says to me "thanks for your help but he can help us, and he has his credentials". (Mind you he hasn't shown anything to her. Just showed up and fit the "description of a doctor") I stay seated. Mind blown. Blood boiling. (Man is responding the his questions and is seemingly better now Thank God)
Then this heifer has the nerve to ask for my input on what to do next about 10 mins later. I tell her we need vitals and blood sugar. She comes back to report to me a BP of 80/50 (super low, to my non medical peeps) and they can't find a glucometer. We continue down that pathway of medical work up, but the point is she needed my help and I continued to help despite the choice words I had saved up for her. The patient and his wife weren't the problem, they needed help and we were mid flight.
She came and apologized to me several times and offering me skymiles. I kindly refused. This is going higher than her. I don't want skymiles in exchange for blatant discrimination. Whether this was race, age, gender discrimination, it's not right. She will not get away with this....and I will still get my skymiles....
Cross's post is resonating strongly with Facebook users, who are fed up with stories of needless prejudice like this. Her essay has received more than 12,000 likes, and almost 5,000 shares. If only that Delta flight crew had read something like it, they might have thought twice before saying "oh no sweetie" to a damn doctor.
That is sad sounds like a successful good hearted woman. I hate BLM but this woman tried to help and was fucking disrespected. People can be pricks idk if it was racism. But lady has right to be pissed
Her story is compelling. No way anyone just thought, "oh she's a black woman so there's no way she's a doctor." There has to be more to it, like she was dressed like a retard, drunk, something.

Why?
I'm a white male married to a black woman for the past 16 years. I've personally witnessed multiple times when my wife's been disregarded because of her race.
The best was when she was a figure skating coach in South Carolina. I was there (I don't skate, I was just hanging out), and someone calls. She talks with them, sets an appointment for a prospective student to come in and talk with her in about an hour.
An hour comes, and my wife's waiting, at the front counter, in her coach's outfit with her name on her jacket. A woman walks in, looks directly at my wife, walks past her and approaches the skate rental person on duty, asking for my wife by first name. The employee points my wife out, and the person's response was, "Oh no dear, I mean the one who's the figure skating coach, not her."
"K*** is the figure skating coach," the counter guy says. The person's shocked, and refuses to believe that my wife can actually skate, even though she's in her coaching gear, in her fucking figure skates even.

So yes, that shit happens.
Don’t waste your time. Some people believe racism doesn’t exist no matter how hard it hits them in the face.
The doctor was probably wearing a hoodie, had giant hoop earrings, and a multi-colored weave. If she is a real doctor I’m sure she just skated thru because of affirmative action.
I’m also sure you’re lying about your firsthand experience at that skating rink.
can't blame the stewardess too much. Most well known black Dr's are not MDs. Dr Dre is a rapper, Dr MLK is an evangelist, Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist. None are MDs.
I heard from a reliable source that when she got back to her seat, someone had fashioned a paper napkin into a noose and that there was a small poop swastika on her tray table.
The Noose - I'm smelling some bullshit here. I don't think this ever happened.
make america great again my friend
I'm voting for Hillary dummy. This has nothing to do with Trump. If this were legit, it would be a major story. There would be witnesses. There would be interviews with Delta employees. There would be a legit news organization covering this story. It might turn out that this is true and it really happened. But i doubt it. The way she describes it sounds like bullshit so until there is something other than her account of the story, I'm gonna call bullshit.

No shit? Wow! Pics of wife or it didn't happen. ;-)
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that hearing a one sided version of a story about someone that being discriminated against that sounds outrageous....it's that it's always 100% accurate.

Lol. So because he smells bullshit about this story, as do I, that makes him a Trump supporter.
It is not out of the ordinary for flight crews to refuse help from passengers unless the pilot authorizes it. Even then it has to be an absolute necessity. How would you feel if the company in charge of your loved ones safety decides it's okay to allow a complete stranger to perform medical treatment incorrectly and that person dies? Who is at fault? The doctor, the airlines?

Correct.
Anyone can claim to be a doctor in that situation.
Of course if your entire focus is on race and being discriminated against then that is the lens in which you view every interaction in life.
After reading it, I imagine that the situation wasn't life threatening at first glance so the attendant rightfully asked for any documentation to prove she was a doctor before letting her attend to the patient.
It's racist because she assumed they would just automatically let her do it if she were white, and I bet the second part about the white doctor being accepted without documentation is BS.

Yeah I give it about 10% it happened exactly as she describes.
Lol one of the comments is a woman saying same thing happened to her but they believed a white person who "happened to have her work ID.". Um so they asked both for ID and believed the person who had it.... But it's about race.
