TN politicians may push to end VW incentives if plant goes union

Volkswagen's Chattanooga Assembly Plant is scheduled to vote on whether to unionize in the coming days, but Tennessee state lawmakers are threatening to deny future tax subsidies to the factory, if the vote is successful.
The factory is currently the only Volkswagen plant worldwide that is not unionized.
The states's Republican lawmakers have been particularly vocal against the union vote. Tennessee state senator Bo Watson said during a press conference that VW would have a "very tough time" with future incentives if the vote were successful, according to Automotive News. Tennessee House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick said the "heavy hand" of the UAW is not welcome there. VW has drawn criticism from both sides because it has allowed both pro- and anti-union groups to speak to workers and hand out leaflets.
Roughly 1,500 factory employees will vote on whether to unionize from February 12-14.
If successful, the Chattanooga factory would be the first in the US organized under a German-style works council system where white- and blue-collar workers directly negotiate factory issues with the company's management.
VW has also been rumored to expand the Chattanooga plant to build the seven passenger CrossBlue SUV, which could add thousands of jobs to the area.
However, if the union vote is successful, politicians may not subsidize the upgrade and force Volkswagen to build it in Mexico.

Not a fan of the UAW but there are a lot of states that would be more than happy to have the factory.
Just look at how wonderful the UAW made Detroit. Unions/ Union leaders are only in it for themselves. I'm apart of a union. Union could really give a fuck about the membership. All they want is your money.
From some news stories, apparently some politicians feel that VW is promoting the union, although allowing anti-union messages, and that unionization would negatively impact their ability to recruit other manufacturers to set up shop in the state. It is understandable that they would not want to continue to subsidize an initiative that negatively impacts the state's ability to grow their industrial base.
Personally, I think the proposed worker-management council of planning may be of benefit, to VW, the workers, and possibly even the state. Seems like it wouldn't be the normal UAW bullshit.
shouldn't be giving them a taxpayer subsidy anyway

While Unions have signifigant internal issues, their 'goal' is to provide a service to workers. Reduction in unionization has a signifigant corollary with the ever increasing wealth hap in the US.
Sure there's corruption and... Troubling ethics, lol. However, the Bernie Maddof's, Exxons and Enrons of the world don't make all corporations harbingers of the apocalpyse.
Perhaps China would be a better fit for you? The same place you're jailed 10 years for simply uttering the word. Can't have those workers looking to better their workplace and conditions, that would be simply irresponsible.

UAW and Ford seem to be working well together
Every employee at their plants got an 8k bonus in 2013
But I completely understand your frustration with unions

Ford bought their way out of the UAW pension plan during the great American collapse. Utilized a lot of capital and credit generated after the sales of Jaguar and the Rover group to avoid ever having to contribute to UAW employee retirement benefits again.
It worked.

The South hates unions. Must be that whole "heritage of slavery" thing.
Why is the state giving
baj54 - Why is the state givingStupid phone, why is the state giving them a subsidy anyhow? Shows how much of a scumbag those politicians are down there. It is none of their business. They were not voted into office to manage private businesses. They need to mind their own business.

Lol at fools who think unions are still about workers rights. They are basically just a democratic party fund raiser now who get paid very well.
God forbid that workers might stand together to fight for better conditions! Fuck me, how is the boss going to afford his 4th house if he has to pay the workers a proper wage!

Yep 100% agreed
I am in the biggest union in NY (CSEA) and they get $46 per month from me, and I still wonder WTF it goes for
baj54 -Every mfg plant in the south received, and continue to receive, huge tax breaks and incentives to locate and operate their plants and offices there.baj54 - Why is the state givingStupid phone, why is the state giving them a subsidy anyhow? Mark1 -Which in turn generate them huge tax revenues from the massive amounts of employees those companies employ. It basically means ill relax a companies tax obligations by x amount of dollars to gain twice the amount of tax dollars in return. And I'm not sure it is 2x the amount. I'm sure it is much more considering how many times a dollar is taxed once its been paid to an employee.baj54 -Every mfg plant in the south received, and continue to receive, huge tax breaks and incentives to locate and operate their plants and offices there.baj54 - Why is the state givingStupid phone, why is the state giving them a subsidy anyhow? I believe the tax breaks given to VW were in the range of $125k per employee.
That doesn't include the infrastructure improvements made by the state.
