Popovich Mount Choke

Guys, i have watched footage on Pablo Popovich and he performs what appears to be a choke from mount where he places his hand on his opponenets trachea.

But i have no idea what he does or how he performs the finish - Can anyone help me out on how its done?

Any explaination or instruction would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You know the choke a nigga be usin' when he rapin' a bitch? Well, it's the same one.

Think i need a little more clarification - lol

One forearm behind the neck holding head in place, with the other hand press your thumb one side and your index and middles finger the other under/behind the back corners of the other guy's jaw into his carotids.

After a bit of general squeezing they should tap. It's a blood choke so it's legal but nobody will be greatful for you using it on them.

I saw it used in a local tournament. It wasn't successful but guy getting choked was not very happy.

There was some discussion wether it was legal or not. I guess it is. Phone Post

You'll often hear it referred to as a 3-finger choke. Renzo showed a variation of it at a seminar and called it a Copa choke. It's technically legal, but can be turned illegal pretty easy. Always causes a shitstorm among competitors/coaches/refs whenever I've seen it at a tournament. Mat Santos actually has a cool variation of it off of a failed guillotine

Popovitch is a bad man and appears to get the tap quite often with this technique when he gets into mount.

I will look into it - if its a high percentage technique, even tho it maybe brutal - then it needs to be investigated inmho.

thanks for the feedback - any other advice/info is welcomed.

Why use something iffy when there's legitimate techniques available?

Gray area move imo. How can the ref even tell if it's legally or illegally applied? What if the choker has it in the non squeeze position, but ends ups squeezing for a few seconds?

We should also legalize the noogie as a submission move.

Thanks guys thats great information and something to think about.

Im hesitant about doing moves on my training partners which they might hate me for - but the same could be said about any choke or sub. In the beginning most subs are are 'brutal' but then people come to accepty that its part of the submission/bjj game. I dont see this as being any differant, but thats just my own opinion.

Bigwormy a question - when they go defensive by getting to the T Rex position on bottom mount do you mean move your chest side to side to create the space and break down your opponents defense?

To everyone else - my understanding of the position so far:

1. Mount position
2. Clear the hands with your chest - open him up
3. Grip the neck 2 fingers/ thumb
4. Elbow into your hip eg if right hand which will mean that you lean slightly towards your right side in mount
5. Watch your base.
6. Forward pressure to choke on the trachea (squeeze as well if the ref doesnt see :)
7. Tap, tap, tap

If any poster has any additional pointers, please dont hesitate in correcting me.

1 a. I forgot one - once i mount, hand behind opponents head to make sure he faces upwards.

A Popovich student used it against me at naga last year. He mounted me, leaned over my face and clutched my trachea. Phone Post
