I popped 2 sections of cartilage betwwen 3 ribs. It fucking sucks. I was 6 weeks out and now have a golf ball sized solid knot.
Popped my rib 4 years ago, still sticks out, hurt like a fucker for a week, limited training for 6 weeks. Fortunately I became symetrical again when I popped the other side 2 years ago. My doctor told me it is more cosmetic than anything, they could fix it with surgery, but what's the point and how long of a layoff?

thanks for the info...i can deal with it if its just cosmetic, i just don't want it to restrict me in the future. this shit HURTS like a motherfucker. trying to find a position i could sleep in was tricky.
Popped a rib out while training bjj, didn't realize it,thought I'd torn muscle in my shoulder, finally went to the chiropractor who told me my rib was popped out, two visits I was good as new. It hurt a lot for a long time before going to the chiropractor though, might want to see one if it persists- don't wait as long as I did!!!
Mr Nemo, did you pop a rib in the back? Usually the Chiropractor can take care of that, just means you're out of alignment. There is nothing they can do when the rib is out in front by the sternum
my rib didn't pop out at the sternum actually, it is towards the bottom of the rib cage about 4 inches to the right of the sternum. i think im am going to have to have the chiro at least check it out and see what he thinks. anybody have this injury in the same spot?
A similar thing happened to me four years ago and I still have a knot from it. I got shut down by a much heavier guy while bridging and felt/heard the pop. I think I took a few weeks off, and when I went back, I got a guy in a clock choke, and just as he was about to tap, the injury reoccurred, and I had to tap!
Everyone is different, so I'm not going to make a recommendation to you, but if I had it to do over again, I would have taken a few more weeks off, maybe six or eight all together.

I've had this happen a couple of times. While a rib can, of course, be broken or moved about in some manner, this is almost certainly not the case with you. "Popped rib" is sort of a misnomer; your rib is most likely not out of place in any sense. You've probably just injured or in some manner torn (though not completely through) the cartilage that connects your rib to your sternum.
If you're really worried, you can get a quick x-ray at the doc to make sure nothing is fractured, but mostly like time, rest, and ice are your only solutions. Although, as with all soft tissue injuries, gentle exercise as pain allows can help, too.
Ajm1218, it was under my shoulder blade, you could put your finger on the edge of my shoulder blade and feel what felt like a marble half exposed, half under the shoulder blade, it was the knuckle of my rib sticking out, completely dislocated. Yep, popped it back easily, felt great immediately.
I've had that one also Mr. Nemo, but I believe he has the type in front, where the band of cartilege that connects rib to sternum tore. It hurts, not much anyone can do for it without major surgery, which I was informed that is unneccesary
