Popped ribs. Advice?

Popped /damaged the lower rib. It's been awhile since I did this. Any advice / time to get back to 100%?

yea take four weeks off and then come back slow or this will be a long term issue , oh and when you come back concentrate on your top game as working from your back will put alot of stress on this . Hope this helps

most important thing to do is not reinjure or aggravate the current injury and make it worse.

Don't do anything that bothers it. What you can and can't do is dependant on the severity of the injury. Sometimes it can hurt when you breathe.

If you don't listen to it (your rib) and allow it time to heal then you will be hindered by it until you do. You could be back in a couple weeks & rolling light if you allow it time to rest or you can be rolling light for a year and still have an injured rib.

Good luck.

i dunno

i went very hard on my injured ribs and the next day they had calcium deposits and were fine

just my story fyi

ugh...worst injury I ever had. felt "okay" after a few days, went back to BJJ and reinjured it. Took about 2-3 months to feel 100% like it wouldn't pop again when someone would stack me up while passing my guard. Take your time coming back. The worst was trying to roll over in bed at night, or feeling a sneeze come along and realize I was going to be in excruciating pain in about 2 seconds. Hope you have a quicker recovery.

Thanks. Sneeze cough and sleeping rolling over sucks.

I popped my rib back in Sept and took 7 weeks off to heal.  It fucking sucked not to train for that long.

Don't rush it or else you'll never heal.

fight it inactivity is the devil

God it sucks STAY OFF OF IT! everytime you try to comeback to early it will just prolong it. you must stay off the mats

Yeah I got advice: No BJJ for you for 8 weeks, not 4,... 8. I had ribs pop twice (one incident on each side). You think it's healed, you try and roll after three weeks until you feel that sudden sharp pain of the rib shifting out of place again. This is not like a shoulder or knee injury where you can work around it and even improve your game by having to improvise. You need your core obviously for everything. I learned my lesson trying to roll too soon.

When you return to normal training, it will sometimes feel tender, like it's ready to give out again, so be very careful. Both occasions occurred traing with way heavier persons. Keep the partners your weight or lighter for a while. * 8 weeks/no mats * intelectual training only.

^^^ this.

I will echo what everyone said. I hurt my rib about 6 years ago. I kept training, and it progressively got worse. It went from hurting at night, to hurting all the time. Anytime I lifted weights, did dips, pull-ups, etc, I felt it popping out and almost dropped a weight on my head once. Being stupid I kept ignored these signs, and I just kept training, so be smart. Take the time off, ease back into training. Losing a few weeks or a month or so is no big deal in the long run.

I tore my intercostal a couple days before xmas.. I took 4 full weeks off.. then started training a little.. I was around 50%.. You need to be careful though, like these guys said or youll hurt it again.. Now its been almost 2 full months and Im training again but Im at around 90% I can still feel a little pressure on that side and need to be aware if I head in that direction.. Twisitng on that side and engaging my full core are the two hardest things..

I popped mine BAD just before Christmas. Took two weeks off, got back on the mat to do some very light movements...somebody was just showing me a move and I immediately re-injured it. Took another two weeks off, did some very light rolling, no one heavy. Slowly built back up from there. I'm now at about 95%, training hard, but still don't feel as comfortable inverting as I did before, and if someone puts direct pressure on the rib with a knee or something, it hurts. There's a bony lump on my ribs there that feels like it's gonna be permanent.

when the dr says its ok ,or you think its ok.
stay away another week and 1/2 min

I would try prolotherapy on it. It's helped speed up the healing on many injuries I've had and the Dr I go to tells me they've had great success with rib injuries.

Otherwise you are looking at a waiting game of 8 weeks or so and it's easy to reinjure.

Prolotherapy was recommended to me, but I never had a chance to try it. Seems like a cool concept, some collegiate athletes my wife works with have had good success with it.

Jeff if you ever need to look into it, I recommend Dr Bradley Fullterton. He's in Austin and all he does is prolotherapy

Tell us how you all popped it.

Episode one, bridging and torquing (twisting) attempting to turn in to my opponent from his side control, I think my legs mahve been strecthed out flat at the time at the moment I bridged by the opponenet. Episode two, escaping back control - once again, a sudden bridge upwards of the hips attempting to skip the hips out and to the mat - with a sudden twisy/torque motion of the upper body towards the opponenet. So there's a connection there with the twisting motion while under pressure. I saw a clip of Chris Breneman/westside strangler (one bad dude!) attempting to extract his arm from Marcelo's arm lock from the guard. He popped his rib from the pressure of Marcelo's legs/hip action against his static, postured upper torso. Video commentator's thought he faked it, If you've popped a rib and felt that kind of pressure, you Know Chris wasn't playing games.
