Possible BJJ'ers now also have the best leg-locks?

finished wathcing metamoris and cant help but wonder if high level no gi bjj players like keenan , vinny, mendes etc are representatives of a new generation of BJJ players who are super high level in the footlock game??

in the past guys were pretty basic "roylers leg attacks in 199 were the holy grail in ADCC"

now these guys are on another planet setup attack and defense wise.. im i right or do these unknown sambo guys still have the game locked down so tight that they are the go to source for the legwork?

In for knowledge

the bjj positional setups have got to be up to par by now right?

y/n?

Still not on par with sambo but we are catching up quickly if reaping is permitted otherwise we're hobbling ourselves Phone Post 3.0

Most BJJs are attacking the legs from 50/50 which is not ideal IMO. I definitely prefer the sambo/catch entries and setups Phone Post 3.0

50/50 aka the Straddle is a SAMBO position. Sonnon had a whole DVD series on the position years before it took off in BJJ.

Yeah and that's what most BJJ guys are using but I think it's inferior to leg knots and other positions and setups that don't leave your legs as exposed Phone Post 3.0

Manly, how about posting a couple basic techniques on youtube. You and Enrico Cocco were killings guys with leg attacks a few years ago at grapples quest. Phone Post 3.0

I think the reason you don't see the leg knot, which is a good position, is because of the rule on reaping.

i agree...obviously the ibjjf rules about reaping have caused bjj guys to gravitate towards the 50/50

sorry i meant more bjj based guys fighting in no gi ala adcc or metamoris..Keenan's guard is nuts in terms of passing and mobility the man's catching legs from every angle

Davi Ramos has executed some sick leg locks when competing no gi. Cavaca has a nice system as well. Phone Post 3.0

who is the go to man for leg locks in combat and sport sambo??

The "SAMBO = leg locks" stereotype is a myth.

Have you guys watched a single sport SAMBO match? Can you name a single top sport SAMBO athlete who hasn't been marketed aggressively for some DVD or other product that targets the BJJ/MMA crowd?

Sport SAMBO is Russian flavored Judo, incubated in the Soviet Union, in isolation, with regional influences from across the red curtain*.

Its a combat sport where two wrestlers go out and try to throw each other, oh, and also there is some groundwork. Yes, some leg locks are legal. But there is limited time to apply them before you are stood back up by the ref, and escapes are made easier (if the defending player stands up in a leg lock the match is restarted).

The whole "Just Russian Judo" thing might set off your troll alarm, but seriously, look it up for yourself. Unlike BJJ, almost every single competitive sport SAMBO player either trains Judo along with SAMBO or competes in both sports. You wouldn't even call it cross training, there's hardly a difference over there. You'll see guys with white gis and black belts training with guys wearing kurtkas and sambovki. My point is if you were a an athlete who competed in both sports, would you waste time becoming an expert in a niche part of the game that is only legal in one of those sports? Hell no!

I would bet the farm that you could take your pick of the any of the medalists from last year's sport SAMBO worlds and send them in a no-gi match against a BJJ player like Toquinho, and the SAMBO guys would limp their way back on the plane to Russia. The fact that heel hooks aren't legal in sport SAMBO (did you know that?), and that "no-gi SAMBO" isn't a "thing" back in the motherland are huge parts of that decision.

The best leg lock guys in the world right now are BJJ players.

*The most notable influence on SAMBO's Judo framework is Georgian Chidaoba. Eh hem, the country Georgia, not the state.

If you've been following the international styles of wrestling and Judo, you'll notice that every worlds and Olympics results in medals brought home to Georgia, a rural country so tiny that its estimated population is smaller than the Atlanta metropolitan area's. The ironing.

If you've ever wondered why such a tiny population can be so successful in the wrestling sports, its because every child grows up training Chidaoba. Seriously, look it up, its totally badass.

My post is by no means a knock on SAMBO players. They are legitimate monsters. They are products of a system that produces freaks of strength and technique. In all likelihood, elite SAMBO player's athleticism is head and shoulders above the top guys in BJJ. On the feet, they could launch most elite BJJ players sky high without even breaking a sweat.

But they train a sport where attacking the legs, while legal, is still mostly a niche technique. Even IBJJF black belt rules for leg attacks are arguably more lenient.

I'm very interested to see examples of what you mean.

The Mat Pimp - 50/50 aka the Straddle is a SAMBO position. Sonnon had a whole DVD series on the position years before it took off in BJJ.

Incorrect.

The 50/50 is a position where both players completely mirror each other, each controlling one of their opponent's legs in between theirs, with the figure four resting on the outside of the opponent's hip.

Funny you mention how the "Saddle" is a SAMBO position, implying the DVD had existed before the 50/50 trend had begun in BJJ. Sonnon marketed very heavily how his system was revolutionary and completely different than traditional SAMBO positions, and that their was a throng of SAMBO traditionalists who despised him and started evil lies about him because they refused to accept how forward thinking and progressive he was. Eddie Bravo had just released Mastering the Rubber Guard to great commercial success and I think, combined with the hate he was receiving from Sambo Steve and his crew (who claimed all the "saddle" shit actually was composed of rather un-revolutionary, traditional SAMBO techniques), he had attempted to use the same marketing techniques to make tons of cash. Spoiler: he did make tons of cash. Or so he says. Whatever.

Buuuuuut this is all besides the point.

The "Saddle", besides being a super gay name for any move in grappling, is a system of leg lock positions. The main one, its probably called "Saddle Mission Control", is not 50/50. It is a position where the defending player has his legs in what would be a 50/50, with one leg trapped inbetween the opponent's legs, and one leg free on the outside, but the attacking player has his legs relatively safe with both feet figure foured on the INSIDE of the defenders legs.

Typing that last bit out was probably a huge waste of time, but there you have it.

The last thing I would like to add is that IIRC this DVD was not out years before the 50/50 craze. Either before the Saddle DVD came out or around the same time, a prodigious purple belt named Ryan Hall was getting sponsored by wheelchair companies because he was creating so many cripples. And as we all know, that shit was on youtube for all of us to see.
