There's actually a legitimate statistical argument that Paul would be the strongest GOP candidate against Obama, period.

Ron Paul is the first TRUE Republican to come along in a while.
He is also the first Republican I would ever vote for since I have been of age to vote. (Do the math, it makes me ~30 years old :-) )
