It's all very speculative though, because you are trying to compare different people fighting under very different conditions with very different rulesets and, importantly, very different timeframes for fight preparation

Wanderlei stood with Cro Cop and Mark Hunt. He was also excellent (really, really underrated) off of his back. In a ring under PRIDE rules, I'd pick Wanderlei. Under modern UFC rules in a cage, I'd pick JJ.

Just a quick note about how fuckin savage PRIDE Wandy was.. Fedor gets hurt and has to pull out of the 2006 HW GP so Wandy stepped in as their MW Champ. The tourney was full of HW legends. Just a badass.

For a long time, I didn't like Wanderlei. His headbutt against Guy, his win over Hendo on a fight he took on short notice, him beating Sakuraba, I didn't like him. I had some respect for him as a fighter, however when he stepped up in replacement of Fedor to fight in a HW tournament as the LHW Champion, He had my utmost respect and I became a fan. I think his fight with Hunt should've been a draw, and I went years wanting Wand to get knocked out, only to be truly sad when it happened from Mirko :(

The Pride HW division was filled with killers, but those killers weren't exactly 265 lbs.

Wandy was able to fight later in age at 185. I don't know if Barnett, Hunt, Werdum, Big Nog, Fedor, Cro Cop, Fujita, etc could ever do that. Sure he juiced (allegedly) to the gills but you can't take anything away from a guy w the balls to step up and fight HW killers when he's already the champ at a lower weight class. Stepping up for any fighter in a higher weight class just means not cutting weight, almost every fighter cuts to some degree. I know it has a 0% chance of happening but could you imagine an open weight GP right now in the UFC? With the HW division being a cluttered mess it would pretty intriguing. I miss the Grand Prix days. You think Bones or DC would enter their names? I don't.

The top 4 guys at LHW would struggle against the top 4 HWs, but they'd do just fine against everybody else.

U make some good points but imo the top 3 lhw now have nothing for the to 3 hw of now or yesteryear

Also I dont know if I would pick any of todays mw lhw or hw to win a GP. Short notice and multifights in 1 night eliminates a great deal of advantages the top guys have today

I actually think Bones is so far ahead of everybody that he would probably win an Open Weight GP (he would def be one of the betting favorites) and Cormier is an elite HW. You make good/interesting points but I was just talking about the balls it took for Wandy to accept the challenge. A PPV was once canceled when Jones declined a short term notice fight w/ Chael (obviously a great matchup for Jones which he later proved) so he's obviously a lot more calculated and mindful of taking risks.

Prime Wand vs. JBJ? I dunno. Jones has the reach and the wrestling to neutralize him. Add in JBJ's MT and Clinch game and Wandy's getting fucked up. He's too small and predictable with his strikes.

Wand vs. Cormier is the fight I'd like to see. Follow that up with Rumble and Weidman for good measure. Those would be some great fights. Anybody else in the LHW division would get wrecked.
