Prime Rickson vs Prime Sakuraba = Who wins?

It’s been a while since I’ve seen PRIDE 4, but IIRC Takada escaped Rickson’s mount at least a couple times. I’d factor that in to the analysis.

Makes no difference but anyone know what they both weighed for that? No excuses, just curious. Rickson was maybe 180 when I trained at the Palisades gym.

Yeah, i dont recall takada escaping mount, but he must have had 35 - 40lbs on rickson.

According to Dave Meltzer, Takada’s real weight back then fluctuated around 210-220

Oh I have no doubt Rickson was lighter, not sure how much. Quick guess- he was outweighed by maybe 20 lbs?

Here’s the fight (PRIDE 4- rematch):

Takada mount escapes:

#1 at 10:05 in the video (not the actual fight time).

#2 at 10:47 in (although Rickson immediately regains mount).

#3 10:58 in.

My point being don’t count Saku out even when giving up really bad positions, as he was infinitely superior to Takada. In Rickson’s defense, he knew in Pride 4 he was fighting Takada and knew his grappling level, so knew he could get away with stuff. But that said, the whole point of Rickson’s was to do the same steps to end the fight each time.

…the whole point of Rickson’s s-t-y-l-e.

fucking UG.

Sak would have whupped him. There's a reason Rickson never signed on the dotted line.

FatBuddha - If prime Sakuraba couldn't submit over the hill Royce in an hour and 30 minutes, he's not beating Rickson.

Royce threw in the towel. Thats submitting / quitting. Saku also beat the piss of out royce for most of that 90 minutes and broke his leg AND was well on his way to kneebarring royce at the end of what i think was rd 1when time fan out.

As usual, you bring flawless logic to the table.

To be fair, that fight was stupid long. They were both warriors that night.

Rickson was past his prime when it was time to fight Sakuraba and no longer enjoyed fighting or training. I’d pick Saku for that alone. And while Rickson was my coach, his back was a mess and he would’ve needed a warmup fight before Sak. Sak wins and that’s hard for me to say even though Sakuraba is one of my all time favorites.

Man, you’re so consistently wrong lol. First, Rorion threw in the towel. Didn’t realize a corner stopping the fight was you submitting/quitting. It’s not.

He beat the piss out of Royce for 90 minutes? How? You consider doing cartwheels and acting like a jackass beating someone? He must suck at beating someone if Royce didn’t quit in 90 minutes. It was a competitive fight. Rewatch it.

Oh he “almost” got a kneebar? LOL. This fucking guy. You never disappoint.

If Rickson keeps on ground, Rickson, but probably Sakuraba most likely. In pure grappling, Rickson.

Well Royce is a better fighter and fought better competition than Rickson and also a steroid user.

Sakuraba would break Rickson’s limb via double wrist lock

Sakura a could win the fight standing and could beat Rickson if he got a takedown, which he could probably do with his slick single leg

Sak did beat the shit out of him, and he did it in a very measured fashion to punish Gracie for all the bs special rules that he demanded. He clowned him.

Rickson wins 10 out of 10 times.

Saku would have won!

My son got his black belt from both of them… Heat neat them at a kumite with Frank Dux…

It’s one of those fights that can go either way. Here’s a list of BJJ stylists Sakuraba defeated:

Marcus Silvera via armbar
Vitor Belfort via decision
Ebenzer Braga via armbar
Royler Gracie via kimura
Royce Gracie via corner stoppage
Renzo Gracie via kimura
Ryan Gracie via decision

It’s not a stretch that Sakuraba could’ve defeated Rickson and probably would have.
