Principles of a competition guard?

What are YOUR personal priniples when playing guard in competition? Grip fighting, maintaing distance, etc...

I was going over some of this just this morning…

  1. Grip fighting is to specific. I would say dealing with grips and maintaining dominant grip.
  1. control or deal with posture

If you can’t break posture, there are other things you can do

  1. inside leg position… Here are two different examples where I discuss and demonstrate this:

-. opening to double sleeve in the first minute:

-. opening to collar sleeve:

the first min of this vid as well

  1. not overextending your legs.

You should generally be able to bring your knees back to your chest when you want.

  1. both hands and feet should be doing something. I see a lot of people relinquish a grip, then don’t know what to do with that hand.

  2. offbalance, offbalance, offbalance.

  3. don’t concede position, grip, etc.

  4. only one predator and one prey…If you’re not acting like the predator, then you’re the prey.
