I took shrooms at my parents house when I was 16, at around 11 o'clock. By 4 in the morning I was dead tired but couldn't fall asleep because I was tripping.. It got pretty bad for the next couple hours

That particular book will tell you nothing at all about mushrooms or psilocybin. (In spite of its title, it really won't tell you anything about the psychedelic experience either).
Leary wrote that thinking that what he saw tripping on acid reminded him of some of what was described in Tibetan Buddhist meditation experiences, and perhaps tripping would be a fast path toward enlightenment. He took The Tibetan Book of the Dead and tried to rewrite it as a script for "sitters" to talk trippers through a particular kind of experience.
No one has found it workable -- no one trips in such an ordered fashion. The book is an interesting piece of history, and you can learn about one of the byways of psychedelic experimentation from it.... as a historical relic.
Go to Erowid online (i.e., this would be my recommendation to start research). A somewhat dry but decent book is Andy Letcher's Shroom. That'll cover Wasson and before, up through McKenna and after. Mostly it's an attempt to debunk a bunch of mythology about how mushrooms were responsible for the "start of religion" and/or particular archetypes (like Santa Claus!) -- stuff you'll likely find asserted in other literature about the fungi. And then there's a ton of McKenna himself -- I find his talks more helpful than his books, though YMMV. To my mind he's more a raconteur than a writer, and he's better at psychedelic description ("trip reports") than just about anyone, but really uses talking about psychedelics as a starting point for other sorts of cultural commentary.

When we got to his house later in the night, his mom was sitting at the kitchen table. She asked him,
"What's wrong with you, Matt."
To which he replied, "I'm trippin balls, mom."

Even when I've had bad trips (IE: trying to sleep and seeing/feeling maggots all over my body every time I close my eyes, seeing dead family members all fucked up, etc) I never came away feeling like it had been a bad time altogether. There is a spiritual flush that happens during the 6 hour flight that makes you feel entirely regenerated and new a few days after. I haven't touched them in almost ten years but I would if I could find them. Might try growing my own but I've heard that it's not a simple process by any means.
I have never had anything close to a bad trip on mushrooms, LSD, special K, ayahuasca, etc.
The only thing close to it are like there were times on LSD where i was like "well i am ready to wrap this up and go to sleep"
A hippy flip or candy flip is the absolute best drug experience in my opinion. LSD or Mushrooms provide the psychedelic effect while the MDMA provides the Euphoric effect.
In for growing tips.
When you do them, grind them up and sit them in lemon juice for a half hour somewhere dark like a cupboard.
Drink that shit like a shot of tequila, then go outside and watch the clouds pixelate.
Remember all cars and cops are real
