We all make mistakes, and youth breeds most of them. Jon Jones made a huge mistake, but luckily the public wasn't harmed or injured when he got behind the wheel of his car and destroyed it after partaking of alcoholic beverage(s).
Many young people look up to the UFC light-heavyweight champion, and having made this mistake, now would be a perfect time to create a campaign against driving under the influence of alcohol by the UFC. Jon is a great fighter, and is probably a good man. I for one, would respect him for admitting his mistake on camera and urge the viewers to not repeat his mistake. Back up the content of his words with statistics involving alcohol related accidents.
The UFC is really in its infancy, and is just now garnering mainstream acceptance. I think that such a campaign would not only be a public service, but would go a long way in showing the public that we, as fighters, care. We are people, and we all make mistakes.
UG, if you agree, please post your thoughts. I am curious to know if I am way off base with this.
Jeff
When I see someone doing a public service message for something they're guilty of all it says to me is
"I'm sorry... that I got caught."
The thing is, he hasn't been required to do something like this. It's paramount, at least to me, of Mike Vick continuing to do things for the humane society even after his debt was paid. The bottom line is, if the UFC can stop ONE person from hurting someone by driving under the influence, it is a worthwhile venture.

Why would it indicate that? There apologizing for they're actions. I agree with the thread! I believe the UFC and Bones should embrace the opportunity to raise awareness! The reality, he got lucky along with the innocent bystanders that shared the road with him that night. I don't think it reflects well on his image, the lack of communication and or apologies! We really haven't heard much from him since this accident.
I'm not saying that I think he should apologize. Just a hey, I messed up... This happened, and THIS could have happened. Besides, admitting to what he did on camera could be further punishment.

As someone who is the same age as Jones I just want to say that it really annoys me when people bring up "youth" or anything involving him being young. All the apologies in the world won't change what he did or could've done. People need to stop playing the age card when defending him because it's retarded.
Not saying you, the OP, should be using his age (or actually using his age right now) as an excuse, but it annoys me when someone mentions him being young to try and explain his actions, or anyone else's actions at me age.
What is Jon Jones REALLY sorry about? I'll tell you what- He ruined a 500k car.
I don't want to hear a fake apology from a celebrity or an athlete. They're not role models. They didn't "let me down", and I'm not influenced by their decisions. If you're of drinking age and you're swayed by Public Service Announcements, you're stupid and deserve to neither drink nor drive.
I have no interest in Hermes Franca doing public service announcements for daycare centers. I don't think anyone needs a moron preaching at them to be more responsible than he is. Get out and support a cause that you actually the integrity to support without looking like a hypocrite.
Whoa! Whoa! Who said anything about apologizing? I personally don't give a damn if he's 20 or 80, if I see someone getting behind the wheel after drinking, I stop them, but the fact is that people do it every day, and if the UFC can use Bones' notoriety to help people to realize what they're doing, then I am all for it.
My biggest fear in the world is that I hurt someones child! I could never imagine how I would feel if I let that happen! If you see a person get behind the wheel and you do nothing about it and they hurt someone, you are EQUALLY as guilty!!
Jones, in my opinion, has an obligation to inform the public of the dangers. He was lucky, as were the people on the road at the same time. If he is sorry... If he truely made a mistake because he's young (HE SAID THIS!!), then he should do whatever he can to keep others from making the same mistake!
Why is everybody being a whiny little bitch on here? It's a good idea since the sport is going mainstream to make us look good. It will be good for the image so hopefully soon people won't look at MMA as something that should be illegal(New York).
Yes, the UFC will be run out of business by lawmakers if Jon Jones doesn't give a hypocritical speech about the dangers of drunk driving.
WOW! This thread got really misconstrued!
Jeff, drinking and driving isn't a "mistake"- it's quite deliberate.
Jones is a world champion of the biggest MMA company on the planet Earth, and he drives a car worth more than most people's home. Obviously he's no stranger to calculated decisions. That being said, I don't want nor need (nor does anyone else) an appology. He's not a role model, and shouldn't be held accountable as one.

If he hadn't crashed his car, no "mistake" was made. He would've made it home as intended, and the hoes he was driving around with would've been his little secret. See, when you get away with something, it doesn't warrant an appology with a public service message. His "mistake" was getting caught.
What about for other things like guys using steriods?
