Punk: I dodged a bullet with shoulder injury

CM Punk today appeared on the MMA Hour and discussed the training injury that is expected to set back his UFC debut a few months at least:

"It was one of those pops where everybody in the room just turns and looks," Punk told Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour.

The former WWE star finished the round anyway and the session, too. Afterward, he mopped the floors as he normally would with the thought that the injury was going to set him back a great deal.

As in turns out, Punk said he "dodged a bullet." An MRI showed there was no tear of his labrum or rotator cuff. The Chicago native is hoping to do some bag work as early as this week and ease himself back into full-time training soon.

"I'd be fine if I could train, if I could do something," Punk said. "But just kind of sitting around waiting for the MRI that week was pretty miserable. Riding the bike hurt. Jumping rope hurt. But it's a lot better now."

The worst thing, Punk said, was that he felt like he was starting to figure things out more and more when the "freak injury" happened.

"It's kind of the most frustrating thing about it," he said. ... "I felt like I was turning the corner a little bit in some aspects."

If he doesn't get a fight before UFC 200 then all hype generated by his wrestling fans will die fast.

Duke needs to understand, since he is cutting a nice cut off his check, that if he doesn't say 'fuck it' lets call Dana now, then his meal ticket would be worth much less.

If Punk is getting any kind of PPV money, just set him up now, no more training will probably do the guy any good, he needs to just get in the octagon and lose, that way he has some sense of an idea what it's like and than book the 2nd big payday fight.

Roufusports are sitting on a gold mind, but don't wanna cash out because it might 'hurt the gym'. Grow a pair, and call Dana to book the fight, if you do it quick, he might get a fight soon, and another at UFC 200 which would be the best option at this point.

Lol no. Wresting fans are crazy and every one of them is going to want to watch Punk whenever he fights either out of adoration or hoping he will fail miserably. I'm sure he will debut probably at ufc 200 anyway.

I'm not sure why he gets the hate he does. Phone Post 3.0

He hasn't seemingly paid his dues and he's famous. Mind you pride had random pro wrestlers com in all the time and shit like this happened as a result

Did there a link or vid to this interview? Phone Post 3.0

Not sure why mma fans still give this chump the light of day but oh well Phone Post 3.0

If he gets PPV he is going to fight. He has two good fights in him at the least. There is too much money on the table.

He felt like he was just starting to turn a corner in his training before the injury

All sounds great. Phone Post 3.0

I think he gets a hard time because he's just some famous dude who was hyped as a future fighter before he even knew how to fight. It's pretty ridiculous to think this guy will actually succeed if you know anything about the sport, at least at a high level. This isn't WMMA, where relative newcomers have a chance because the sport hasn't caught up. Phone Post 3.0

Damn right he did, he might've actually been able to set up a fight before this. Phone Post 3.0

Because mma fans and pro wrestling fans hate each other for no fucking reason. Both are niche sports and would stand to benefit by supporting each other rather than spitting on the other. Phone Post 3.0

Agreed. This forum is funny because basically if you're at any level of pro fighter you can beat up any pro wrestler. Simply isn't true.

Do I think Punk will do really well and hit the apex of MMA's welterweight division? No I don't. But I don't get why hate or cheer against him. He's the ultimate under dog story in the sense he has absolutely no athletic background that would traditionally be a great base for MMA. Why not support him? Plus he's been excellent for the UFC in the sense of press. He's said absolutely all the right things and has conducted himself in a way that most fighters would never conduct themselves. He also trains, legitimately 3 times a day. Whether he does well or not, he's putting in the work, the time, and the effort.

I for one will be cheering him on and hoping for the best for him because, why not? Phone Post 3.0

Because 1) He has absolutely no athletic background [no WWE doesn't count] that can show he has a chance in the cage and 2) UFC signed him with no fights at all or any training. He didn't even have a camp or weight class decided yet. Dana constantly claims the UFC is the place "where only the best fight"

Ofcourse fans were going to crap on this. UFC signed him because they were afraid he'd backdoor his way into Bellator if he signed with TNA [TNA wrestling and Bellator were both on Spike TV and had talent exchanges. Hence why Tito, Rampage, etc showed up on TNA]
Then shit in the UFC, not him. It's not his fault they came and asked him if he would be interested.

Let the dude have his fun and either watch it don't. It doesn't effect or negatively impact your life one bit. Phone Post 3.0

This. WTF. Everything you said here is a reason to be mad at the UFC. I'm still waiting to hear why HE gets so much hate. Are their interviews with him talking shit personally? Saying he is a beast, hyping himself at all? Otherwise it comes off as bitter and jealousy.
