Putting 4.44 Transmission in my SVX AMA

This is probably going to be a "cool story, bro" for 95% of the people here, but oh well.

So I have a Subaru SVX that is one of my secondary cars. Was trying to sell it last year and didn't get what I wanted so I kept it. It is in real good condition, but these cars always have transmission issues. I replaced the trans in it already and I am sure it will go again.

So if I want to keep this as a "fun" car there are two option. 5 speed swap or 4.44 swap. 5 speed swap is better, but also costs $4-5K to do and that is way too much money to put into just the transmission of a 20 year old car worth about that total already. The car was never offered in manual so people have found a way to put a legacy (shitty) or WRX (the way to go) trans in these cars. It is fun, but not what I am willing to spend.

The other option is taking a 4.44 gear ratio transmission out of a Subaru Forester and altering the differential so it fits an SVX. It increases torque about 40% in 1st gear and 10-15% over all and takes a full second off the 0-60 time. I can get this done for under $2K.

I think it would be fun to drive the car again and I can then modify the engine to make it more powerful. These cars were fucking cursed with the worst transmission ever that simply cannot handle the engine as it is.

I highly doubt any of you have one of these with this modification, but if so let me know. Otherwise AMA.

Thanks.

Already a member there, but I usually go to the SVX forums for more detailed info. The guy who runs that site is the one doing the install for me sometime this spring/summer.

Why do you have to alter the differential because of a tranny change? Isn't there a driveshaft in between? How much will parts vs labor be?

Gears are one of the best bang for your buck mods.

However in this case I'd be concerned about nuking the trans especially if you add more power. Admittedly I'm somewhat ignorant on Subarus but If it's already a weak link then making it work harder with more gear can't be good. Phone Post 3.0

What gear ratio is in it now? Phone Post 3.0

You should also put bullhorns on the front grill, and those sweet purple lights under it that make it look like it's floating!

FLOOOOOAAAAATIIIIING!!!!

Other than that I can't help you with the rest of it. I drive a 96 Cherokee that's on it's last legs. Then I'll buy another shitty car and drive it till it dies. Sorry! Phone Post 3.0

Lots of tards posting in your ama. Sounds like the forester tranny swap will really wake that svx up. Do it! Phone Post 3.0

Save your money and get the five speed put in. You would get more back if you ever sold as a stick anyway.

Surprise you still have that SVX. Still looks good. Phone Post 3.0

3.56 are in it now. It will cost $1800 or so. 5 spd is way more and not going to get return on it more. Phone Post 3.0

It isn't my primary car and sat for a while. Not going to get what I want for it so I might as well keep it and tinker with it. Phone Post 3.0
