Quality of Judo Blackbelts

best coaches usually arent world champions..

Obviously a lot of it will come down to the individual
athlete, but the trainer matters too. Let's revisit
the Harvard example: Let's say Player A went to 'Judo
Harvard'-SJS, Cohen's, OTC, or somewhere like that.
Player B trains at a local club. Let's pretend that
Player's A and B are equally hard working, tough, etc.
And last, let's pretend that Player B is a more
naturally talented athlete than Player A.

I'd say the winner here isn't clear at all. While
Player B may be more athletic, Player A has had the
advantage of working with some of the best players in
the country. He's probably had more high-level
randori, better trainers, and better facilities.

There are reasons that certain universities are
expensive and have excellent reputations- they put out
excellent students, due to the quality of faculty,
facilities, programs, and the other students.

It's really hard to place a value on intangibles like
coaching, trainign partners, natural ability, and
drive, but don't you think that some places are, if
you want to be a high-level competitor, better than
others?

"OTC,"

OTC is NOT the place to really learn Judo from the start, it's more like finishing school, sort of, or a place to go to train hard and get some specialized coaching, maybe.

Ben,
the OTC has had a kids program for a number of years now. they dont teach beginning adults that im aware of, but kids they do. very, very good development goin on there too.

I can't even look at Judo and BJJ the same way. No disrespect but BJJ does not have the added edge where it incorporates traditional views and foundations like Judo. Many of Judo's true teachings are found in the words of Kano and the great teachers of Japan.

For ME, i can do all the matwork i can but when i started understanding what people like Funakoshi, Tanemura, Takeda etc were saying, i became a better martial artist...

Besides the kids, developement of people who already do Judo.

It's not the place I'd send anybody who is not already proficient at Judo..adults, not kids.
