Don't you need to train in the Gi to be able to call yourself a belt of any color at Brazilian Jujitsu?
I was always told by my instructor that without competing in the gi I will not be able to gain level or belt rank in BJJ no matter how good I get no-gi.
Like for example Joe Rogan is a Brown Belt under Eddie but they don't use the gi. So is Joe even able to call himself a legit BJJ Brown Belt? Would he do well in a Brown Belt competition against true BJJ Brown belts who train in the gi?
I belive your instructor is doing things the right way. Some people dont compete and still become black belts but they still have to train with the gi.
I train both Gi and No Gi, and have killed my self to get to the level of purple belt, my hands are busted from grip fighting and playing with the gi. I am firm beliver that if you dont train with the gi, you shouldnt be ranked the same way. Maybe they can use another ranking for No Gi practioners but shouldnt be the same.
If joe rogan would put a gi on and try to compete with BJJ brown belts with the gi, he would be in trouble.

P.S. this is just my opinion, it might not mean much since I am not a black belt, but I thought I would answer the question.
"Don't you need to train in the Gi to be able to call yourself a belt of any color at Brazilian Jujitsu?"
This is correct. In order to be considered a belt level in BJJ you have to train in the gi.
This is not to say that a no-gi practitioner would not do well against a legit Black Belt in BJJ in no-gi competition, but it is just simply stating facts. Traditional BJJ is trained with the gi and rank is given out based on your accomplishments with the gi.
The no-gi vs gi guy aspect has as much to do with the two particular individuals involved as it is what they have trained. I know no-gi guys who are insane on the ground and have never trained gi. I also know gi guys who are insane on the ground and have trained both.
The arguments of gi vs no-gi is a long one. Both have advantages. It's good to train both, IMHO.
no-gi grappling really shouldn't be viewed as the same as gi grappling. they are THAT different, imo. Both should have "belt" levels but should not correlate to each other in said rankings.
Yeah just was looking at another thread and they had BJJ belt ranks for guys who don't train gi.
If you don't train in the gi then you can't have a level in BJJ from what I have learned.
In order for me to gain level then I need to beat gi fighters at that same level. To get a blue belt I needed to beat all white belts. Now I'm a blue belt and I will never get my purple belt unless I go and compete against blue belts and win.
This to me is the true way to elivate your rank in BJJ and is the reason if you get a blue belt then you have already achieved a big promotion on the same level as say a Tia Kwon Do Black Belt.
In other words I believe some folks are throwing around I'm this in BJJ and I'm that in BJJ but really are not doing True BJJ it's just JJ.
^^^No, because there are all types of guys in traditional bjj (with gi) who attain their ranks (brown or black) without ever competing. What about those guys?
i don't see the problem with levels, but lose the "belt" for no-gi. It's not part of the uniform. IMO, use jockstraps. For instance, Joe Rogan would be a brown jockstrap under Eddie Bravo in no-gi submission grappling.
the only thig is if you were needed to use in a real life situation how many people are gonna be a gi
Gi vs no- Gi, the have their simularitiesbut they different bottom line, some people like a certain martial art and thats there preference
but i think no gi is alot mor practical and realistic
As I started to type this message, I was a firm believer that No Gi guys
should be given belts in BJJ because if you take the gi off you are STILL
doing BJJ, it doesn't suddenly change to submission grappling - its Ju-
Jitsu.
But I changed my mind on the belt rankings a little bit. A person needs to
know the Gi game. Not the crazy ass upside down guard hold the sleeves
and stall. But the basic Gracie Ju-Jitsu GI game. Because it is applicable
on the streets.
As I said in another thread. Its winter time and everyone is wearing a "gi".
(winter coats and Jackets).
Lets train GI and Judo throw them and choke the shit out of em.
For MMA when we are half naked yes...for the street no no no. Gi is better for the street especially in winter.
Jeans + Jacket = Gi
Even a sweatshirt or a button up shirt can be used for chokes. T-shirts would most likely rip IMO
When will we be able to fight naked in the street. I can see taking the shirt off if one has time but you know how things pop off in the street. It's fast most of the time.
^I too have changed my thinking a little bit. I was a hardcore "Must train with the gi" type of guy until I started training some wrestling and lots of no-gi. I also messed with Judo for a while as well. I like all of them and they all come together to form a great foundation.
