let's not forget that Carlson was a terrible manager of a school and a horrible gambler. Master Carlson is a legend and a mountain like figure in Jiu Jitsu, but the fact is the man's financial woes were mostly his fault.
Is that the same as the house in Florianopolis...? For some reason I thought that was the house they "stole".
I recall someone telling me Carlson had a shirt made that said "They stole my house in Florianopolis" and wore it to a tournament or something.
(Maybe it wasn't in Florianopolis and I just remember it that way).

Carlson was a bad business man. I just don't think he cared about money at all. He wasn't about making money. He never even put out instructional videos. I think he was the opposite of Carlos Gracie,Jr in a lot of ways.
If a man has 21 children, unless he's very rich not just well off, they probably aren't going to inherit much individually.
As stated before I worship the ground master Carlson walked on as a jiu jitsu professor but people are putting him on a pedastal. He was a man, a man with flaws and attributes, he was bad gambler who lost most of the time in cockfights. He was a bad administrator of his own business. Ofcourse he cared about money, he had a family to feed, it is just that he was horrible in 1)making it and 2) keeping it (gambling).
It was said that Carlson was too nice (and naive) and let too many people (including some of his own students) take advantage of him. I know he had a boat load of students but the majority of them trained under him for free (although I'm sure many of them would dispute whether it was truly free or not considering some claim they did alot for Carlson).
I have an interview of Robson Gracie (Renzo's father, Carlson's brother) where he said Carlson wasn't very smart. I assume he was refering to business/finance.

I remember reading something similar from Robson. Carlson Senior was a nice guy and generous, from what I've been told. People took advantage of him which sucks.
I recently found an old interview of Helio published in the 2001 Brazilian version of Playboy magazine.
In this interview Helio was asked: if his family became from Jiujitsu?
Helio's reponse was:
"We were not rich. My children worked hard, here and there, without rest. We live well but we don't have alot of money. The expense of the academies were also great. If we made 200,000 Reis (Brazilian currency) half of it went to taxes. My small farm (320,00 square meters located in Itaipava in the hill country of Rio) was bought at the time when land was cheap. I paid 400 Reis. Today it is very expensive but no one has the money to buy. Therefore we weren't then and still aren't now rich."

That's pretty cool and just shows your character of not taking advantage of a friend.

VTFU! Years ago Relson said the same to me and I still paid. He knew I had little money but was very generous and gracious to the dedicated. There are a lot of stories of this; I imagine with Carlson as well. It's their upbringing and generation that fostered this. If you ask me, we should try to foster this way of thinking. Sure you might get burned but you might really affect someone for life in a positive way. At our academy, we(coaches) talk often and when we feel a student/parents have a difficult time paying, we try to discount/waive tuition when feesible. We gotta keep the lights on but giving a little goes a long way IMHO.

the ranch house was only 2 bedrooms when it was bought,land was cheap ,they sunk every penny into it.
helio was never rich but always well connected,kinda like my freinds got a jet,my freinds got tickets.
