Question for fighters: Broken Hand

I broke my hand in a fight this past weekend (MMA). I threw an overhand and it landed on the side of his head, thumb first. I shattered the bone and it impacted the lowest joint on my right thumb. I had surgery yesterday to align the bone and they put pins in it. I get the pins out in a month and the doc said I'll be out of a cast in 2 months.

My question is: for those who have broken their hands fighting, how does this affect my hands ability to absorb the shock of throwing a punch? Will my hand go back to 100% or will it break easier in the future?

It wasnt a boxers fracture and it was sort of a freak angle so im hoping my punching ability wont suffer since it was the thumb and its not really a major part of a fist.

Also, what kind of workouts can I do with a cast on my right arm? I dont want to get fat sitting around not doing shit.

lowest joint? Did they fuse it?

Dysqo - lowest joint? Did they fuse it?

They just put some wire and pins in it to align the bones and reset the joint.

KevinMcAllister - I'm just an amateur. but I broke the 4th metacarpal in my right hand about 4 years ago. It should be stronger in the future so long as it heals properly and you stay on top of the physio. The general consensus is that bones, when healed, are stronger than they were before. You will probably feel hesitant to throw it fully for a while after you begin sparring again.

Workouts I'm not sure. Cardio obv, leg presses? Whatever you feel comfortable with I guess.

I thought that bones being stronger after being broken was a myth? I heard that they were thicker, but not necessarily stronger.

Broke metacarpal, right under ring finger (4th?) 13 years ago. There was a plate put in there. I dont even think about it now. Just had to have a cast on all the way up to elbow. That sucked. Actually happened grappling I was thrown and reached out to break fall/ and landed on it wrong. In the past few years I have been doing a lot more boxing/ stand up. And I don't even think about it. Weird thing for me is once in a while cold weather or rainy weather doesn't hurt it, sometimes just get a little sensation on bone, I barley notice it. And maybe it's in my head.

Anyone else think Paulo Thiago broke his hand tonight? I thought he must have as many times as he landed that overhnd right on the top of the head...

(I knew Rashad broke his on Tito's head before the fight was over...)
