Raising Money for Leukemia Research

(Short aside – Kirik – I met you at Kipp’s Christmas party and meant to tell you about this. If you could make this a sticky or something for a little bit, that would be very helpful, thank you.)

Hello all, my name is Drew Cathers and I am looking for some help. This summer, three of my UCONN School of Medicine classmates and I will be undertaking a cross-country bicycling trip during our last summer vacation. This trip will take 7-8 weeks and will cover over 3,000 miles, starting in San Francisco and ending in Connecticut.

The purpose of this trip is to raise money for the Lea’s Foundation for Leukemia Research. This organization is non-profit (everyone is a volunteer) and is based in Hartford, CT. Its purpose is to raise money for research and treatment of Leukemia and other blood cancers. All funds raised from the trip will be allocated to on-going research programs taking place at the University of Connecticut Health Center on leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

In 2007, the Foundation made a $1.25 million donation to the UCONN Health Center, leading to the creation of the Lea’s Foundation Center for Hematologic Disorders. In 2008, the Foundation provided another $345,000 to the Center. I will post a recent article written about the Center below.

I need some help:

-Can anyone provide me with contact information for the larger companies involved in the MMA world? Large company sponsors are usually a good way to raise money and also a good way for those companies to get their name out there for a good cause. Last year’s riders raised over $50,000, so we have our work cut out for us. If anyone has information (emails, phone numbers, etc), for companies like Sprawl, Tapout, UFC, etc, that would be very helpful. I’ve already spoken to Kipp Kollar at NAGA. If you don’t want to post someone’s email on the open forum, a PM or an email would be great. I figure it can’t hurt to ask…

-I know this was a large topic back in the fall, but does anyone know where I could purchase an Evan Tanner shirt? Preferably one that will have the proceeds going to charity or to his family. I’d like to wear it around during my cross-country trip, since his life and passing is part of my motivation to go on this trip. In the fall, I participated in Habitat for Humanity in Evan’s honor (and will again in the spring), as did many others on this site, and I would like to continue this through the summer.

-Lastly, if anyone is interested in making a donation, please contact me. Due to the current economic situation in the US, I’m not really expecting any great amounts but any little bit can help.

Thank you all.

morning ttt

Drew what's up buddy! Project sounds great. I will sticky it in about a week if someone reminds me. Is booked up till then.

What are the dates of the bike trip? Do you know yet?

Thanks Kirik.

The dates of the trip are going to be from around the second week in June until the first or second week of August. It depends on how fast we go but it usually takes around 7 weeks from what I understand.

If I can fit it in my stuff, I'm hoping to bring some of my gear and my gi and trying to stop in at BJJ/MMA/Boxing gyms along the way, just for the experience.

Oh, to leukemia research, not to me. I apologize for any confusion.

TTT, a very close family friend is in Rosewell hospital in Buffalo NY, he recently had a bone marrow transplant and is in remission.
