UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture knows a thing or two about high-profile rematches after his illustrious fighting career.

Former UFC lightweight title challengers Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will square off for the ‘BMF’ belt at UFC 291 next weekend. Poirier and Gaethje fought earlier in their careers in a wild war in April 2018, which Poirier won by fourth-round knockout.

Poirier and Gaethje will fight for Jorge Masvidal’s ‘BMF’ belt after Masvidal announced his retirement following UFC 287. Masvidal won the ‘BMF’ title by defeating Nate Diaz at UFC 244; his final win in the UFC.
Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 arguably sells itself perfectly on its own without a title on the line, and Couture thinks that should be the focus.

Randy Couture Isn’t A Fan Of BMF Belt

During a recent interview with MiddleEasy, Couture weighed in on the UFC 291 headliner and the ‘BMF’ belt.

“That’s all for the fans in my opinion,” Couture said. "Why don’t they do the interim fights the way they do it? I stepped in for an interim title shot against Chuck Liddell and it’s something they do to add that layer of speciality for the fans and those who watch those fights…I don’t place a lot of merit on the BMF title, but sure, cool, why not add that to your collection?
Couture then gave his thoughts on whether Poirier or Gaethje holds an advantage ahead of their rematch.

“I think the guy that won the last one, the onus is always on that guy,” Couture said. “The other guy has to make some changes, adjustments, see where he makes mistakes…you’re taking a wild-ass guess as to what those changes are…it always puts onus on the guys who won the first fight, great competitors, they’re gonna bring it and I think their tactics and techniques are polar opposites, and that always makes for an interesting fight.”
outure has had a strained relationship with the UFC since his fallout with UFC President Dana White during his fighting career. He now serves as a top analyst with the PFL alongside Kenny Florian.

Poirier and Gaethje picked up wins in their last fights, and both fighters have grown a lot since their first matchup. While both of them have fallen short of UFC gold, they’ve asserted themselves as two of the biggest names in the sport.
Poirier vs. Gaethje is expected to be one of the best fights of the year, and Couture doesn’t think the ‘BMF’ gimmick is necessary to put the fight as a pay-per-view headliner.

Met Randy and Kim in 07 when he opened a XC school in FL. They came to the gym, did a meet and greet and trained a little.

At one point, Kim started doing pad work demo, and it was atrocious. Plenty of people looking around wondering wtf she was doing hitting the pads. We were the for Randy, not skank hoe .

I’m all for the BMF belt. Just wish they’d all more belts. For example… the fat guy belt.

“Just win baby” is boring as fuck. He’s overrated and doesnt deserve the moniker of captain america or the natural.

I believe this is likely because there is no merit in the BMF title.

Randy and Mark Hunt both! Used to be a big fan of them.

I like that he said Gaethje and Poirier are polar opposites that use totally different tactics. Lol I bet he doesn’t watch and probably couldn’t pick them out of a lineup.

I‘m not really a fan of Randy as a fighter, but I love him outside of MMA.
