I am not trying to rip on Tim, but could you call round one a 10-8 round for Randy? Tim wasn't able to do ANYTHING that would give him any points. He was strictly on defense for that entire first round.
Good job recovering from that major wobble though. I think if Randy hadn't followed it down, he could have finished in the first.
other than the punch not really close to finishing fight .. Randy was in rear mount and never got his arm under Tim's chin & didn't hit him effectively either ... 10-9
If Randy followed and mounted Tim after and had him very badly hurt, nearly to a stoppage and then took his back and actually had some close RNC attempts then, perhaps but Randy never got close to the RNC.
This round was nowhere close to 10-8. Randy landed a solid punch, and had good position. If Randy had continued to land damaging blows from that good position, rather than doing essentially nothing for 4 minutes, then 10-8 could be possible.
I thought that Randy was close to a RNC pretty much the whole time. He had both hooks in and the only reason he didn't finish it there was because Tim was hanging on to Randy's wrist for dear life.
"I thought that Randy was close to a RNC pretty much the whole time."
He was never even close to sinking the RNC. right after taking Tims back Tim trapped his wrist and just hung on waiting for the standup. Randy even looked at BJM and waved his left hand as if to say WTF? He could have just been acknowledging BJM saying he wasnt going to stand them up yet.
Randy drops Tim in the first ten seconds, proceeds to pound for a few, then takes his back and works for a rnc. What else could he possibly do that would have constituted a 10-8 round? 100 percent domination=10-8 in my book. Tim did absolutely nothing except get punched and defend a finishing move. No question it should have been 10-8 imo.
it should have been a 10-9 for Randy, minus a 1 point deduction against sylvia for stalling, so 10-8. I know people will say, "how was he supposed to be aggressive with randy on his back the whole round?" Well id say it was obvious that he was just trying to get a standup by holding Randys hand the whole time and not actively looking for an actual escape, which to me=stalling
UFC tend to give the round to the guy lying on top of the other, so you could say that Tim won round 1 becuase he was on top of Randy for most of the round

ROFL! Good point armbar. WTF fight were the judges watching!? Tim was on top the whole time!
"Does the UFC have this rule in place? I wasnt aware of it."
This is the closest foul I could find to that rule:
"Timidity, including, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent, intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury."
I don't think that MMA is well-served by the 10-point must system, but that's what's used by in large, and I think that first round could be considered 10-8.

Stalling is a foul, but it has never been enforced in the UFC. Pride enforces it pretty regularly, and that's a good thing. Sylvia should have been penalized in round 1 for stalling, IMO. BJM even recognized the fact that Sylvia was stalling (and CORRECTLY did not stand them up), but should have deducted a point for it.
Round 1 was 10-9 due to no point being deducted.
For an example of a 10-8 round, see Franklin/MacDonald round 2.
