? re: ibjjf federation card

Excuse me for living under a bjj rock. Jsho's thread regarding federation card requirements for masters/senior in Rio made curious as to how this whole system works. Can someone explain the purpose of the federation membership for me? Not just for masters/senior competition, but for all ibjjf competitions.

For instance, the World's this past weekend. If your school is not a member of the federation you are not allowed to compete?

Anyone?

It is purely a security measure to keep terrorists off the mats.

money making scheme

you dont need a card to compete until your a black belt. if your school isnt under the federation or your instructor isnt and your a bb you need to have another bb (2nd degree or higher) that is a member sign off on your application. This is in regards to ibjjf events held in the US, I dont know about ones held in Brazil or Europe.

Thanks bgup. Interesting, it's really for black belts. I can see how it'd be a money making scheme all around. You got the "official" guys making out with all the loot, but then you get those terrorist blackbelts offering $$$$ to sign off on your application. Hurray JIU JITSU!

Plus, you have permission to use roids :)

Im pretty sure that you now HAVE to register with the cbjj/ibjjf before fighting in any of their comps, im a blue and i have to register to fight in the masters and seniors in rio in july. Phone Post

no need to be argumentative and use capital letters and all. I was speaking from experience as a veteran of 5 ibjjf tournaments in the US I have not HAD to have a card yet, most recently at the 2011 Pans. Perhaps they require the card at tourny's in Brazil. I dont know, what I do know for a fact is they were NOT required under the rank of black belt at the Mundials last weekend or at the Pans a couple of months ago. Ill let you know when I register for the Vegas international open in aug if they require it then.

I'm not sure if they require them in US tournaments, but all belts have had to carry a card in Brazil for years. Phone Post

reading is not your strong suit I see, I clearly wrote my observation applied to US ibjjf events not the masters/seniors which is in Rio. geez some people just look for reasons to argue.

thanks for clearing up the brazil thing now we have an answer. but I can personally attest that they are not required under black for US IBJJF events..

We have had nothing but problems trying to compete this year. We have competed previously in 2007 and 2009 at the Masters in Rio and all we needed was our passport. Now they are saying you need these cards. Our Canadian federation does not have member cards, so the IBJJF told us to fill out the member form on the website. Our affiliate school in Rio is not even listed, even though they are if you apply for a brazilian membership, but we are not allowed to apply for one of those. And I recently got sent another link to another form for me and my friend to fill out because we are both blackbelts and they want $400 for our cards and certifications? This is ridiculous. It should not be this big of a hassle to compete.

So it's not required yet, but looks like that's what they're moving towards.

sure hope this isn't coming for the euros. i'm not sure if there are even any 2deg blacks in germany. they'd end up with like 50 guys at the tourney.

as of two weeks ago at mundials no, not requied at US events. I can see them moving forward someday but it may hurt revenue for them so who knows.

I have no problem with needing a membership but as blue belt in Canada that has competed in the US 4 times under the IBJJF as well as one in Portugal and one in Rio I am frustrated with the lack of consistency. I competed last year in Rio for the Master and Seniors and did not need a membership. Now I have filled out my membership and need to send it to Brazil for our Master black belt to sign because my Professor in Canada is a 2nd degree black belt under the CBJJ and is not recognized within the IBJJF. So he now has to pay to be a member of two federations in order for us to compete.

I signed up for the Brazil Nationals, went down to Sao Paulo to train before the competition only to get a run around on not being Brazilian and then not having an IBJJF membership. Never once after talking with the CBJJ did this ever come up until a week before the competition, hence I could not go to Rio. Phone Post

Hopefully if they're going to move to requiring everyone to have one they announce it way ahead of time so everyone has ample notice. It would be nice if that's the plan if they announced it now and said that in 2012 they are required. That gives everyone 6 months to get themselves set up with their membership cards. We'll see I guess.

No way I'm going through all this hassle when Im gonna lose in the 1st rd anyway
