RE: Sudo/Laursen (SPOILER...)

Spoiler...obviously, not sure if Heroes is on N.American PPV or not but what the hell is up with Sudo?

I know his loss to Kid was a bit of a controversial stoppage but apparently this Laursen guy was only on his MMA debut and is listed as a kickboxer on Sherdog? How the hell was he able to hang with Sudo on the ground and all? This is a review from Mmaweekly:

"In a 72kg weight-class matchup, flashy Japanese fighter Genki Sudo took on Ole Laursen of Denmark. Sudo started with spinning kicks, and when the fight went to the mat looked ready to put Laursen into a heelhook. But the Dane spun out of the hold, and after shaking a Sudo rear mount was able to get into a mount of his own. The two showed speed and technical prowess here, with frequent reversals, but the first ended with neither dominating.

They went to the mat quickly in the second. Laursen worked some good moves, but the slippery Sudo stayed out of danger. Laursen threw Sudo from the clinch and passed with punches then leapt in with a couple of stomps that were among the best attacks in this very exciting fight. Back on their feet, Sudo missed with spinning back punches to end the round. A close contest -- the judges saw a draw and called for a tiebreaker.

Here Sudo got into side mount early but Laursen's defenses gave the Japanese fighter little to hit. But Sudo soon got a full mount and did better with his punches. Laursen reversed and wanted to stand and strike, but Sudo got the takedown and was better with a side mount and triangle hold through the remainder to take the win by unanimous decision."

I dont know who this Laursen guy is and what Sudo's condition was but imo Sudo is not top 10 material at the moment if he goes to a draw in regular time with a MMA rookie coming from kickboxing.

Whats the deal?

Genki dominated Royler on the ground and has several sub victories over credible opponents in MMA, as well as impressive submission grappling wins. If he had a hard time putting away Laursen, it's more likely to be because Laursen is good than that Genki is bad.

Larsen can and most likely will be a force in MMA.

Sure, theres a difference between having a hard time putting someone away and having your opponent being able to hold their own but this should still be quite suprising to anyone imo.

Also, Genki didnt really dominate the ground action with Royler until he smashed him with the knee and finished things. It was pretty even with no edge and with Royler pushing the fight early.

I mean Genki couldnt put Bang away either, though he may have if Bang didnt get the cut check but BJ tapped Bang in minutes. I just think that if Genki is gonna be a more elite fighter, he should start winning like one.

They may list him as a "kickboxer" but that doesn't mean he hasn't trained in other diciplines.

The sherdog report states that Genki was limping badly after the figth and had later had his knee taped up. Genki hurt his back pretty badly about a year and half ago (?) too, so he's had some nagging injuries.
