REAL Sports on HBO and the UFC

I saw that the show REAL Sports on HBO has been around for over 10 years and I've never seen them do anything on the UFC or MMA. What's up with that? REAL Sports started out around the same time as the UFC did. REAL Sports is supposed to go beyond the lines and investigate sports related issues, seems like they should be all over the UFC. Does someone at the network have issues with the UFC? I doubt it would have anything to do with the content of the UFC since they cover other nefarious topics. Have any of you wondered about this?

I dislike Bryant Gumble.

I bet he is an arrogant prick bastard in real life. Bob Costas tools him easily

HBO is and always has been 100% for Boxing, and ONLY Boxing. In their entire exsistance, never a single word spoken about any other form of Martial Arts.

Not one.

didn't they do something on bob sapp?

Real Sports seems to enjoy doing profiles that haven't been covered to death everywhere else.

They did profile Sapp. And after a profile on Toughman and that scumbag Art Dore, Gumbel asked the filing journalist if it was anything like ultimate fighting. The guy responded that MMA guys are trained professionals who know what they're doing.

Small mention, but still positive.

I was surprised when I heard them say on HBO that MMA fighters are trained athletes.
The Bob Sapp episode was more on how he got a new carreer after football. And on how he is marketed in Japan.

Gokartmozart is correct, if Real Sports did a segment on the UFC it would be something like this.

The owners and president are all white, all the current champions (Mir/Arlovski, Liddell, Tanner, Hughes) are all white. Yet the number one contender for the vacant lightweight belt and the person who the president of the UFC said should be the champ at 155, just happens to be black. So he doesn't get a chance to be a champion in this white redneck sport. Oh and they would go through all the crowd footage and show only the drunkest rednecks.

The story about Sapp was about how he was a victim of racism by the Japanese.

"HBO is and always has been 100% for Boxing, and ONLY Boxing. In their entire exsistance, never a single word spoken about any other form of Martial Arts.

I think you're forgetting The Smashing Machine which followed Mark Kerr, etc. This is an HBO produced documentary.

http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/thesmashingmachine/

i think "from spectacle to sport" was a rediculous 30 min show on ESPN once.

also, i don't think HBO had anything to do with the smashing machine, they just bought the rights to it

The Smashing Machine wasn't produced by HBO. It was an independent film they picked up.

what is the difference between hbo and bet? nothing that i can see.

"Real Sports has an ultra-liberal bias to it."

Liberal how? Does John McCain also have an "ultra-liberal bias" you fucking chucklehead?

You were stating it in reference to MMA, that they would give MMA a negative angle due to "liberal bias." That is just stupid and wrong, considering conservatives have done more to hurt MMA in this country than anyone.

Perhaps YOU should think before YOU type.

"It's been the conservatives who have tried to destroy MMA since the beginning."

This is true for the most part, I can't think of one Democrate that has really been against the UFC, but I could list a number of Republicans. I think it falls in with their holier-than-thou attitudes and try too hard to impose their brand of morality on others. Therefore the UFC is frowned upon sense it promotes violence and not family values.

The Bob Sapp segment focused on his K-1 fights too, not really his MMA fights. And the Smashing Machine documentary was filmed by another film crew, HBO just bought the rights from them so they didn't necessarily seek to spotlight MMA from the beginning, they jumped on it after the fact.

It just seems odd to me because you have the birth of a new sport in the US that has been successful and fairly popular and all I hear are cricket curps from HBO. Would they ignore the emergence of any other sport that had the same following as the UFC?

"lol@the UFC having a following for the last 10 years. You guys are beyond delusional."

Actually it's the truth. I think the UFC's PPV buyrate peaked with UFC 6. They did very well at their inception and got a pretty big following at the time.

hey as long as they put out quality shows on football I am cool, HBO is the best by the way

what other new sport has such a following? Its not easy creating a new sport from scratch and the UFC is/was popular. I mean we've seen more footage on espn than on REAL Sports.

I think Bob Costas is coming back with his own show on HBO- maybe he can do something with MMA.

stlnl2 is correct.. What nobody knew at the time was McCain have muillion rolled up in Budwieser... the #1 sponser of Boxing... so he's going to wipe out anything that can even remotly have a shot at taking money away from boxing which is why he slammed the UFC for years

BUT, now that the UFC is Gaining legit sponsers.. like gorden biersch... He has backed off and its soley because maybe down the road he believes he might be able to make money from it.

...which is a good sign in my opinion

"McCain have muillion rolled up in Budwieser... the #1 sponser of Boxing... so he's going to wipe out anything that can even remotly have a shot at taking money away from boxing which is why he slammed the UFC for years"

That's a crackpot theory and budwieser has actually sponsored other events like Superbrawl I believe.

"Yeah but liberals hate it too."

I'm sure some do, but for the most part its been the right trying to run out MMA. Remember that Sport or Spectacle show on ESPN? That town that event was going to take place in was shut down by conservatives on the city council. Giuliani and Goodman from NY were two outspoken Republicans against the sport. I wonder if McCain would have much support from this site.
