I'm going to pick up a heart monitor but I know nothing about them. Any particular brands that are good or features/specs that I should look for? I'm not trying to spend a bundle but I don't want something crappy either. Thanks.
So, you wouldn't recommend a watch with a built in heart monitor?
I use a mid-range polar with the chest strap monitor. From what I understand the wrist monitors are notoriously inaccurate and if you want to measure heart rate it is best to actually monitor the heart and not the pulse in an extremity.
The polars are great but there are other great monitors on the market. I guess it really depends on what other feature you are looking for. Some will address distance by foot toggle or GPS, some will adapt to cycling and also calculate RPM and other cycling stuff. Personally the midranges are great for heart rate info but the next one I go for will be an all inclusive like the high end polar or garmin watches.
Remember, these are just tools that help you monitor. What you do with the information determines whether it is a help or hindrance to your training.
Are the ones with the chest strap technically for biking?
Polar is a bit overpriced but a safe bet.
I hear Suunto is very good as well.
I have a Timex one. Seems good, and you can replace the battery yourself. When I compare the number on my watch to an average of counting my own bpm, they are usually within a beat.
Polar
Go with Polar. I have had to use heart rate monitors for labs here at UF and the Polars, by far, were the most accurate for the price.

Thanks guys. I've been shopping around for a Polar the last few days.
I have a Timex Ironman one, seems good, accuracy is decent.
Garmin 305
I ordered a Polar a couple days ago.
