Need some professional medical help for my knee problem.
If you've had good experiences with a sports medicine MD or a physical therapist in Atlanta, I'd like to know about it.
Thanks.
I'm a chiropractic fan myself. Just got back from an appointment and feel like a new man!
I just made an appointment, so this thread is now moot.
Thanks anyway.
goodluck man hope yuo dont have to go throughwhat im going through.
In ATL Dr John Keating .......Kyle is my Chiropractor also
Baroquen,
How did you get injured?
Sorry, I don't know the area, but I would NOT go to a Chiropractor for your knee if I were you.
Go to a Physician; someone with real diagnostic skills based in evidence based medicine. (e.g. sports med or Orthopedist) and get a PROPER diagnosis. If appropriate, you will be sent to a Physical Therapist.
That is what has the GREATEST chance of helping your knee.
I second what Shen said.
Dr.Lippitt is an orthopedic surgeon who does prolotherapy injections - had good results with him
Dr.X is also an orthopedic surgeon who works at Emory is a specialist for knee injuries - he is a famous sports doctor
Someone mentioned Dr.Keating above - he has many friends in the bjj community, but I don't know how good he is
Emory has a great rehab center
Good luck!
Shen,
According to law, drug companies can only say that their drug can be used to treat specific conditions that were tested in clinical trials. However, doctors, by law, can prescribe any drug for any reason even if there has been no tests/trials/evidence supporting its effectiveness for any other condition than what is stated by the FDA. I have a student who was living proof of this as doctors "experimented" by giving a variety of drugs for a condition he had. Basically, doctors have the legal right to experiment with patients and try treatments that have no scientific evidence in being proven to be effective.
So I don't think it is completely correct to imply that physicians act solely upon evidence based medicine or else the law would be different. I'm not saying that doctors are experimenting all the time, but I am saying that what they do is not evidence based 100% of the time as some people may believe.
I heard good things about Dr. X but I'd get second and third opinions before I let someone cut me.
If you're looking for a P.T. guy for rehab I recommend Aaron Schauble he trains with us and got Jacare back on the mat in 3 months after his knee surgery.
His office number is 404 389 0077
no WAY i'd go to a chiro
^^^Then you may be missing out. Kyle will tell you if you need to go see someone else.
Well, maybe I misspoke.
It's not that I would never go to a chiro.
There are currently two schools of general chiro thought.
One school (by far the smaller) is made up of practitioners who are trying to reformulate chiro into a medical practice based on science. I think this "new" school of chiropractic is very interesting and definitely worth a look as there are many kinds of esoteric bodywork that have value. They believe in using chiro to treat musculoskeletal disorders only. I would check one of these guys out for sure.
The old school of chiropractic has been shown over and over again to have little or no scientific merit. Not only is there little evidence that this kind of treatment has positive effects on one's health, there's plenty of cases where chiro has actually seriously injured patients. When I say no way I would go to a chiro, it's these guys that I am talking about. (Sublaxation nonsense, etc).
Does that make sense? I get most of my info from internet research. If you have any information or articles to the contrary, I would love to read them!
You're doing the right thing asking. Most people don't take an active role and just listen to the first doctor they find.
Dr. X is the real deal though you might get tired of hearing about all the football players he's worked on. He'll let you know about PT but most of that work will be on your own. If need surgery definitely get a second opinion as a general rule but if I could make only one call he's the one.
The other person that's helped me a lot is Steven LaScala. He's at Soft Tissue Chiropractic in Buckhead and does chiro and ART. I'm not sure what he could do for a knee.
Personally, I'd be reluctant to go to Keating. By all accounts he's a great guy but I've heard things that concern me from a few people. I know of one case where he told someone they didn't have a problem and, after 6 months of time off, the guy went to another doctor with the same MRI results, had minor surgery, was back about 4 months later. I've seen the crippling effects of bad joint surgery and don't want to take any chances.
I'd also avoid Resurgens Ortho at Crawford Long. Thankfully I didn't need surgery but I could have been back in action in half the time with better treatment.
Good Luck
