looks better than Never Back Down but I'm confused with the marbles and the convoluted storyline
It looks so terribly cheesy that I cant wait to see it. The whole handicapping thing is weird.
That said, Mamet has done great things in the past, and Im excited to legit badasses like John Machado and Randy on the big screen.
I heard the rape scene was tastefully done.
i'm not expecting too much.
for some odd reason, having real fighters performing techniques on camera never looks right to me. it always looks too clean and perfect, more like a "demonstration" feel to it, and they're obviously not as good as a seasoned actor at projecting emotion.
i hope i'm wrong. Mamet's awesome and i love his work. this just looks way too cheesy.
I train under John Machado, and he keeps asking me if people are talking about the movie online.
At any rate, the trailer looked good to me except for the marbles thing. Wtf is with the marbles? I don't get it.

Helio used to do the marbles thing all the time in Brazil. I know a guy who knows a guy. Trust me.
If you can dodge a wrench......
Looks like a fun movie.
Umm.
That looks terribly complicated. Very Mammet like.
Max
you know what it takes to make a good BJJ movie?
it takes BRASS BALLS to make a good BJJ movie ...
I'm looking forward to seeing it
Well, I believe, Mamet co-wrote & directed "Brazilan Brawl" --one of the better BJJ themed films of the last decade-- so I honestly don't see how this could be bad.
I just watched the preview and I don't know what the confusion is about.
A good trainer is broke and needs money, a classic man down on his luck story. This trainer is discovered after he saves Tim Allen's character in from a bar fight. He uses a training method where people randomly draw a marble before a match to determine if they get a handicap during the match. That idea is stolen and used by some fight organization to make big bucks, without giving him any credit or money. Conflict ensues.
Of course it doesn't make perfect sense, but you'll have to see the movie to understand all the intricacies.
Looks way better than Never Back Down. I'd be more concerned with the fighters possible flat acting than with their moves not looking real. Mamet is a big fan and is making this movie specifically with the idea of more accurately portraying BJJ.
That movie looks interesting...I will totally go see it.

Fixed
Doesnt Mamet train BJJ?
I'll see it.
The movie is not really a martial arts film, so don't go in there expecting it to be one.
It's a drama with martial arts in it. REdbelt is based a lot on the old Japanese Samurai films of the 1950s -- like Kurosawa's "Sanjuro Sugata".
Yes, Mamet trains in BJJ and has been doing so for 6 years or so. Ed O'Neil got him into it.
I thought Redbelt was a terrific movie. One of Mamet's best, next to "Spanish Prisoner".
