Remember when youtube banned...

Remember back when youtube banne / de-platformed Alex Jones (only for virtually every other platform to follow suit)? And everyone was like, "good - fuck that guy!"

And me and like maybe three others here were like "hey now - don't you realize what sort of precedent this is setting??" And everyone was still like, "good - fuck that guy!"

Interesting to see how that whole precedent thing has ended up playing out, huh?

At first they came for my neighbor and I said nothing. Then they came for my other neighbor and I still said nothing. Then they came for me and asked if I'd like to join, so I did.

It was definitely way more than three, fwiw.

I still stand 100% behind YT's absolute right to deplatform whomever the fuck they want, & your absolute right to not consume YT's product.

Out of curiosity, what's the impetus for this thread?

Probably Youtube deleting the videos of the doctors that are going against what the WHO is saying and the company that had started developing a medical device that you could shove down peoples' throats and could hit the lungs with UV before Trump had talked about it.

The whole ‘fake news’ thing really became the precedent for this. This narrative has built for the last couple of years, to the point now any alternative view is censored / removed, and we’re told the news sources that we can trust (that’s the BBC in uk).

more worryingly, the vast majority lap this up and ask for more. We’re doomed.

"Out of curiosity, what's the impetus for this thread?"

The threads running right now about youtube pulling down videos (or at least the one with the doctors that ended up on Tucker Carlson) with contrarian views re covid risk, mortality, etc.

Are you from the UK? A lot of people I knew growing up think the entire news media is right wing in Britain and even want the BBC defunded as it's apparently hate speech and a bunch of tories, which I think couldn't be further than the truth.

I don’t agree with the people you know either!

when it comes to MSM narrative in uk - I don’t really think of right / left, the narrative wouldn’t and doesn’t change no matter who is in power.

anyway, the BBC is more like a quasi government dept, with more than their fair quota of gender neutral, disabled folk. Just saying.

If I'm running YT, I do not want to expose my investors to the risks from publishing quackery to billions of litigants during a pandemic. If I lose the patronage of Wiggy from the OG, I'm cool with that. Any other position would be profoundly unwise & unintelligent.

Even taking away the massive financial risk for minimal gain, at a strictly moral level, I don't want the history books to cite my company as the source of this century's New England Vampire Panic.

Side note: There's also zero chance I lose Wiggy from the OG's patronage, but that's not important.

Yeah I've had to distance myself from people I've known 20+ years as it's all political talk and bullying tactics, very strange considernig we all grew up having fun, chasing women, getting way too drunk and doing your usual early 20s living. Then all of a sudden everything is hate speech and digging up old tweets / facebook posts people have made so they can call them racist / homophobic when they have a huge history of saying so much shit online equal or at times far worse than what someone else said, just so they can "win" and argument in which they are wrong.

They just want whoever they decide to be in power to be in power and genuinely take pleasure in anything bad that happens, I'm not really a fan of Boris but when he had COVID and people I knew thought it was brilliant, I just don't have time for that level of hate in my life.

Seriously. Like arc123 said they hire people but not based on talent or worth, which to me tends to be very left leaning. But to some people anything that is remotely pro tory is vile hateful racist sexist homophobic transphobic shit and should be stopped. Most of the news in the UK is just Daily Mail clickbait bullshit, the majority of what we read will be BBC and it's very left.

I agree, but there were quite a few of us that thought it was a terrible precedent.

From my understanding, Youtube was protected from lawsuits due to being a service provider (just a platform where anyone could post videos within reason like no porn etc..) as opposed to a publisher where you can be sued (they decide what gets posted due to opinion etc).

I asked on another thread whether this was the case as I learned of this from videos and I'm not sure whether this is true.

If it is true they have moved from provider (where they were protected from lawsuits) to publisher (where they can now be sued as they chose what gets posted due to opinion.)

I’d agree if YouTube was a news organization and supported and created their content. However, they’re nothing of the sort. You seem confused by all of this.

Good for you for pointing that out!
