Renzo Gracie (NYC) is perhaps the Top BJJ Academy

I believe Renzo Gracie (NYC) to be among the top 4 ‘BJJ Teams for MMA’, if not the BEST, on the account of Top MMA Teams training with Renzo Gracie. As you can see (https://youtu.be/v18C4Ba51Rc), Tristar cross-trains with them. Select members of Serra-Longo (Weidman trains with John Danaher at Renzo’s Manhattan location). UFC fighters drop in at any given day.

The other 3 would, in no particular order would be:

1. Gracie Academy (Torrance, CA) (Rener’s work with Black House Fighters. ‘T-City’ is the latest protégé.)
2. Cesar Gracie Academy (Pleasant Hill, CA) This is actually an MMA Team housed within a BJJ Academy. Most of their fighters have elite BJJ in their arsenal.
3. Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu (Las Vegas, NV) Coaches various UFC Fighters.

Any other MMAUndergrounders think that another BJJ Academy should be at the top spot?

Seems like a lot of guys come out of Renzos academy. I always felt he was the best Gracie for mma. He mixed everything well for the time he fought at.
Makes sense that so many good fighters would be coming out of there given his actually real ring experience and facing some huge names at a time when NHB/MMA was so raw.

Dude is a pillar in the game for more then just his fighting for sure Phone Post 3.0

I don't care who drops in, or who they have used to gain publicity.

Who have they produced?

Renzo has produced Serra, Almieda (Spelling?), and??? (Those two were off the top of my head, Serra then teaches Weidman BJJ, Frankie got his BB from Almeida, etc...)

Cesar Gracie's resume of fighters isn't bad either. Nick and Nate Diaz Giblert Meledez (and his cousin Gilbert), Jake Shields, David Terrell, etc...

Weidman didn't come out of Renzo's.

GSP didn't either

Edgar didn't either (Almeida)

Dan and Jim are under Jamie Cruz

Sapo is out of ATT

Barboza is under Almeida (Same as Frankie)

etc...

Although Renzo's students have certainly produced a lot of fighters, I was addressing who he has personally produced. Not everyone who has come out under his students.

Those students (Almeida, Cruz, etc...) deserve credit for that, don't you think?

Unless he moved recently, Sapo definitely is out of Renzo's. He teaches there full time and trains there.

This Sapo?

EDIT - Checked Renzo's website, I didn't realize Natal's nickname was Sapo

I also don't get what difference it makes whether one of Renzo's black belts who teaches at the NYC location. or one who teaches at a different location really matters.

Say you get a bb from renzo.

Then you go cultivate your own gym, students, etc. . . For 10 years. Who gets credit for those students, you or renzo?

You do.
Otherwise, why aren't we skipping renzo, and giving credit to his instructor, etc....

Those other schools aren't renzos, his black belts pay to be part of his association. He swings by for a seminar once a year, etc.... Phone Post 3.0

Wow. While I don't disagree that renzo and his team are top shelf. He must be doing something right if so many guys seek him out for a little tutelage. But you logic is flawed that's all. By your logic technically Carlson sr is the best school considering all the camps that have spawned from his original camp and all the champions and wins that his teams and students have produced

i can assure all the guys I mentioned when have a fight train in the nyc academy! and even they dont fight i just saw GSP the other day rolling on the mats! and he wears renzo patch when walking in with his gi on Phone Post 3.0

Wouldn't a better way to look at it be to see who dominates in the NY BJJ pro competitions and the Opens? Just look at the gym that consistently produce champs and medal winners.

in for BJJ drama

I admire OPs passion but I have to ask. How many of these combat athletes that train in NYC are there for Renzo or John Danahar?

Sure, but guys stopping in and guys being produced from white belt are two WAYYYY different things.

GSP was a purple or brown belt before he met Renzo IIRC, and he didn't get his black belt from him either. Though I know Renzo helped him with 3 or 4 fights.

Renzo's is my gym so I'm gonna be biased. I do feel it's a Mecca Phone Post 3.0

2 different sapo's you guys are talking about Phone Post 3.0

Are we talking sport BJJ or MMA? Renzo has some guys tearing it up, notably Garry Tonon and Eddie Cummings.

But Alliance, Atos, Checkmat, Ciao Terra, Cicero Costha -- these teams are more relevant in sport BJJ.

If you're talking about bjj schools that have produced good mma fighters then those schools work but in the bjj world not even honorable mentions.

Maybe renzos with the recent success of Eddie Cummings and Gary tonon and a few others.

But schools like Saul ribeiros, atos, checkmat, gracie barra cuz of the size but they win a lot, cobrinahs school is coming up, Jean Jacques, academy of jiujitsu, so many better schools then those.

This exactly. Sorry I didn't see your post and typed pretty much the same thing.

Marcelo Garcia has a school down the street from renzos and although it's much smaller it might be better.

Now that I think of it I don't think Gary tonon and Eddie Cummings even got their black belts from renzo.. They just train there. Shawn Williams got his bb from renzo.

And all those fighters u guys are mentioning haven't accomplished anything in the bjj world.

I'd have to say ribeiros, atos, alliance, checkmat and gracie barra hq have the best teams in bjj.

Brazilian top team is good too
