Repairing a Gi

Just wondering how do you repair a small rip in a Gi? Do you just patch it with any material or get the same material as the pants? In my case there's a small tear by the drawstring loop of my "ripstop" pants. Probably a simple solution to a stupid question Phone Post

A little tip, save your old gis so you can carve them up and use them to patch rips on your current gis. But do you plan on repairing yourself? Because if you aren't I'd just go to the seamstress and tell them to repair as they see fit. Part of the reason the pant area rips right at the drawstring loop is because people will tighten their pants by pulling on the drawstring against the loop itself. The loops are not meant to take that kind of load. Its there just to keep your string in place. That means that when people tie their pants, be mindful not to put a load on the loop. Second is that the repair of the rip doesn't have to be super strong because that area should not experience much abuse at all.

I'd go get some extra ripstop found at any fabric store, double it up since most readily available ripstop fabrics are very thin(like ones found in JoAnnes), then use it as a backing, then sew the edges of the tear onto that fabric. I then would go through the middle of the tear making an X or zigzags. I recommend similar material as backing because thicker materials against the thinner ripstop can actually cause the thin ripstop to wear thin and tear along the repaired area. Just like when you weld, the weld itself is much stronger than the sheet metal around it. The sheet metal will tear way before the weld deteriorates. In this case with the thicker material, it may help speed up wear in that area.

I'm not trained in this, just what I would do. Sorry if I'm not much help.

wow some good advice... I think your right about the Over tightening theory... I do notice when I over tighten the drawstring that's when the loops seem to be under stress. These particular pants have like 6 loops and that day I actually double looped the string which is pobably why it got torn. Phone Post

It depends.

Do you know how to weld?

You ought to mend and patch this. If you are asking how, you should take it to a tailor or seamstress.

If you are going to do it yourself, you should have a sewing machine, and two pieces of material. When I hemmed my gi, I saved the cut off portion. You might have to use a seam ripper to detach the end of the belt loop near the tear to give you a good patch.

Cut each patch to be a little larger than you need, then press (iron) each edge over so that the cut edges will be folded inside the patch, next to the gi. Place the two pieces of material on the inside and outside of the tear, matching the corners through the gi, and pin. You'll want to sew really close to the edge, start at one corner, backstitch to secure stitching, and stitch around, backstitching again at the end.

For strength, you may want to zig-zag stitch down the path of the tear to further strengthen the patch.

Re-attach the beltloop if you removed it.

TL;DR If you can't sew, find a seamstress or a sailor (with an S). The sailor has a better chance of understanding how to mend and keep the material from ripping more.
