Repubs/Elephants - Dems/Donkeys - WHY?

Why are Republicans in the USA represented by elephants and Democrats represented by a donkey symbol?

I'm a little lazy today and don't feel like googling and I imagine the responses here will be more entertaining anyway.

Thanks in advance.

His opponents called him a jackass (a donkey), and Jackson decided to use the image of the strong-willed animal on his campaign posters. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast used theDemocratic donkey in newspaper cartoons and made the symbol famous

Nast invented another famous symbol—the Republicanelephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion's skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.”

So basically both animals were chosen because they were an insult to the other party and then the other party took it and ran with it rather than be insulted?
