at the docs now, she took my pulse and said 'ooo' then got an EKG machine and my resting heart rate was 49....that can't be right can it im unfit as fuck?
It's mostly genetics. I do cardio for a month and mine is goes down to 38 when I sleep. Who knows what it would be if I put a solid year into it.

I'm 72-74 and I've run marathons
listening here you would think I'm that's crazy high, but it's normal
thus thread will go on like the others with outrages claims
In for all the OG liars. Which is especially silly when you consider Resting Heart Rate is not that big a deal in terms of being an indicator of health and fitness. Its a good indicator that something's potentially wrong if it is ridiculously out of the normal range (either too low or too high).

Like the guy who did cardio for one month and ended up with a resting heart rate lower than Olympic athletes? Lol
I run 40-50 miles per week, and I am typically mid 60s. I have been as low as 48-52, but that is a rare moment. at a dr's office, forget about it. I'm like 80.
I have a friend who does ZERO exercise; smokes and drinks, and he is at 60, midday, while out and about. Probably goes down close to 50 when he is sleeping.
If op is at 49, at the Drs office, he is probably a bit lower in his sleep, as well.
Really more of a relative measurement. What is YOUR resting hr. Im mid60s when out of shape, 54-56 when fit. 48-50 at sea level.
That happened to me. When in for an earache and next thing I know I'm getting an EKG because my resting heart rate was so low. Hovers around 41-45BPM. At night it goes down to around 38. I had to do a stress EKG on a treadmill too but doc gave me the all clear after the results. I work out but nothing crazy.
I bought a Fitbit to track my heart rate just for my own entertainment. It's pretty cool how it breaks it all down.

For the sake of scrutiny, what is your method of taking your heart rate, and why and how were testing it during your sleep?
Have you ever been tested for any abnormalities? ekg, etc...
mine is 65.
In other words, I am perfectly average.
I have a strap on my wrist that measures a lot of metrics. Says my average heart rate is 55 today. The lowest it's been is 49, the highest was 65. Resting heart rate has to do with "rest". If you have easy days and don't do much your HR will be lower than someone who doesn't get enough sleep to recover from the stressors in their life. It's not uncommon to have RHR in the low 50s but "38" is Olympic spectrum.
I think measuring Heart Rate Variability along with Resting HR is far superior. I've been doing it for the past month to predict how recovered my body is. Low HRV and High RHR is an indicator that I need to take it easy that day (low intensity) because my sympathetic system is not primed to adapt.
Mine was 51 other day when getting blood pressure done. May even be less, then, when I sleep. Never tried. Either way I trans two hours most days so I expect it to be low.
disbeliever -I'm serious I've posted pics to prove it in my heart rate thread. One thing that affects it immensely is alcohol. I go Mt biking daily for an hour all hard climbing and I see my heart rate spike for 3 days after drinking.black89 - It's mostly genetics. A 49 would be the HR of a very fit person.
I have a Samsung Gear Fit 2 which monitors HR. According to a reviewer who tested it vs a HRM strap, it's accurate to within 2-3 bpm. I have my doubts though.
Anyways, every week my lowest recorded HR is between 45-49. I'm laying in bed right now but just came back from a day out with my daughter. Recorded at 65 bpm.
I put no stock into those numbers, but there you have it. Also, lol @ 38
I've kept track of my heart rate for about a year, part of that included RHR (resting heart rate at night)
In Jan 2016, it was about 68. I was not physically active much, maybe a yoga class here and there.
In October 2016, I was doing 1 cardio boxing class a day, then BJJ 3 times a week, and sometimes a 2nd cardio class in a day, for a maximum of 3 hard physical activities a day, with some jogging thrown in on other days. My resting rate got down to 54. When I over did it, my RHR started to creep up into the high 50s / low 60s.
Now, in Jan 2017, it's about 60. I'm almost completely physically inactive, haven't exercised in months but do play drums for about 6 hours a week.
There's an obvious connection with cardio and RHR, and there does SEEM to be something with that hypothesis/theory about overworking and seeing the RHR go up.
Something I've always struggled with is poor cardio performance, despite having decent lung tests and doing cardio multiple days a week and an OK heart rate. I've always suspected some sort of lung damage (smoked for about 6 years in early 20s) but haven't smoked in 10 years. I get tired like when running, pretty damn quick.
Saltine American -thats what i thought! then the nurse said you dont look like an athlete (thanks cunt lol) i jacked my back a year ago and have only been going for walks lately so i exercise fuck all....used to run/train a lot.Delinodeshields - at the docs now, she took my pulse and said 'ooo' then got an EKG machine and my resting heart rate was 49....that can't be right can it im unfit as fuck?A 49 would be the HR of a very fit person.
