ricardo arona is not bjj

He may train with a team full of bjj players, but he doesn't have any real attributes of a good bjj'er. In adcc, he wins on takedowns and top control no different than mark kerr. In mma, he is all G and P like a wrestler. when he fights again, i'd like to see his background listed as wrestling.

he has competed in the GI in brazilian jiu jitsu tournaments long before fighting MMa or doing abu dhabi. soprry hes BJJ.

you should argue that with him since he has a tattoo with jiu jitsu on his chest

eh.. carlson gracie jiu-jitsu was ALL about top game. Arona is just a student of the Carlson approach.

Arona has never trained jiu jitsu, really. He's all catch wrestling.

"I guess Paulo is not BJJ either.

You SHOULD NOT be allowed to post on here until you've been a member for at least one year. It would save everyone the ire of having to read continous retarded uninformed statements like this one.

Now remove your TapOut shirt in shame. "

normally agree, but then again, lots of people like me have been here off and on for since 1997, 98.

LOL, but i will remove my tapout shirt and my TUF beanie and shave off my goatee and grow out my hair. But I'm keeping the UFC tattoos though.

seriously, i'm not arguing who he may be taught by or trains with... i'm saying that he fights and grapples like a wrestler. is that an insult?

Ok, He's all judo.

Hes a great Muay Thai specialist.

"you should argue that with him since he has a tattoo with jiu jitsu on his chest"

So, tattoos are the marker for style. alright.. brock lesnar is SharkDickDo.

You have not clue as to what you are typing about.

"i'm saying that he fights and grapples like a wrestler. is that an insult?"

No, its just grossly stupid.

Arona is classic Carlson Gracie BJJ. Carlson always favored a strong top game and takedowns, and his guys always had a stronger emphasis on incorporating more advanced judo and wrestling techniques into their take down game.

And on the ground, Carlson guys, like Wallid and Sperry and Bitteti, all focused and had great, dominating top control, that stressed keeping and advancing position over looking for subs, often times favoring it too much in many observers eyes. It all came from looking at BJJ from a Vale Tudo appoach first. In Carlson's eye, its nice to have a good guard, but it should be for defense first, and its always better to be on top.

Arona is just more of that continued. THe difference is he is stronger and more athletic than most of those guys, and has better takedowns.

Just look at his match with Dean Lister, where he was more than capable of matching him with submission tries and escapes. Or against The Russian Ignatov, where he showed classic takedown, pass guard, take mount, take the back and choked his man out.

ADCC against Roger Neff, a very big strong wrestler, Arona pulls guard and secures a leg lock.

Against Rampage, Arona pulls guard and works off his back, doing quite well until is mistake with the triangle.

carlson gracie students are not just top oriented... murilo bustamante is well rounded. Liborio, no explanation needed. Carlao Barreto, the dude was the master of the triangle and was hard to beat on his back, but he wasn't as good on top.

He's more like tito in that respect then. tito choked out sato and leglocked mike van arsdale. He has a tough time when he can't get a takedown usually, like he did against tito, vitor belfort. I'll give him credit that he's a wrestler with a bit more sub skills than mark coleman, but he's definitely no better than matt hughes or randy couture in subs when it comes to mma.

yea he never had quinton jackson locked in a triangle or anything

100% Brazilian Judo IMO

i think the point of the thread is arona fights like koscheck despite a bjj bb

and i agree, i'd love it if he used his subs

anyone seen the no-gi match where arona punches the other competitor??

"anyone seen the no-gi match where arona punches the other competitor??"

Yes, it was more of a slap. Arona was clinching and pawing with karimula barklaev (who is known to have a nasty temper). anyway, they were both very zealous with their pawing to the face. barklaev does an especially hard face shove and ricardo bitchslapped him. karimula (i'd be pissed to if i had a name like that) went kinda apeshit for a minute, spitting and flipping off arona. the match continued after cooling down. arona won on points for lots of takedowns and top control. karim kept doing this weird somersault to try to get out of arona's grips. he definitely grappled like a wrestler there.

arona = MFS of Rio

i think arona would do pretty well against collegiate wrestlers considering that threw hendo around.
