Rodriguez Will Face Rothwell in IFL Finals

Former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez will replace the injured Tom Sauer to take on Ben Rothwell in the IFL World Team Championships this Thursday.  Rodriguez (26-6) was named as a late replacement for Renzo Gracie’s New York Pitbulls after a biceps injury forced Sauer off the card.

Though Rothwell has been one of the IFL’s marquee fighters thus far and its most dominant heavyweight by far, Rodriquez will be one of the most experienced fighters he’s faced in his time with the Quad Cities Silverbacks.

Rodriquez defeated current UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture to take the title from him in 2002, though he would later lose the belt to Miletich fighter Tim Sylvia.

In addition to holding MMA victories over the likes of Couture, Jeff Monson, Andrei Arlovski, and Ron Waterman, Rodriquez is also an accomplished grappler, winning a gold medal at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships.

The match-up poses an interesting test for Rothwell, who has won twelve straight fights to improve his record to 26-5.  Fans have been vocal about wanting to see him face more experienced competition, which is exactly what Rodriguez should provide.

After struggling through a difficult time in his personal and professional lives, Rodriguez has rebounded as a fighter to win five straight matches after a busy 2006.  His last bout saw him earn a TKO victory over Lloyd Marshbanks in July.

Stepping in for Sauer will not only pit Rodriguez against the rising star Rothwell, but it will also put the IFL title hopes of Gracie’s Pitbulls on his shoulders in what is sure to be a very close team contest.

The event takes place this Thursday, September 20 in Hollywood, Fla.  It will air the following Sunday, September 23 on Fox Sports Net.  Consult our TV Schedule for more details on air times in your region.

Ricco is going to MURDER Rothwell.

^^ I doubt it. I got Rothwell winning this one.

Is that poopchuteboxe he's fighting?

That was when Ben was 17 years old and it was his first fight ever. What was Ben supposed to do not fight - you can't blame him that match up blame the promoter.

As for this match w/ Rodriguez, I think it's a great fight with Ben winning.

Whoo!!! I think Ricco is going to win. Wow, I'm actually really excited for this fight. I heard Ricco is in good shape and if he is, this will be Ben's biggest test, atleast in the IFL.

I would have asked if it was you, but your just a shriveled up tiny little helpless guy. So couldn't be.

Nice autostart noise maker though shrivel tits. Keep up the good work, your such an asset to the forum.

lol

Ricco hasn't necessarily been fighting top competition either, but I still say he takes Rothwell.

When will this be televised?

nice. ricco looked in good shape this past weekend at battle cage xtreme.

"Ricco is going to murder Rothwell"....That was the EXACT same thing I was thinking. Sure Rothwell has looked good in the IFL, but he hasn't ANYONE close to the kind of fighter the Ricco is/was. This is Ricco's return to glory, IMO.

I was actually thinking about going out to this event until I saw it was on a Thursday. Fucking IFL with their weird ass days of running shows. Be normal and run your shows on Saturdays!!!

This is awsome. Rothwell by KO

sucks it wont be live

taking Ricco, to big of a step up for Ben

"It will air the following Sunday, September 23 on Fox Sports Net. "

maybe people will finally give Rothwell some credit after he wins this one...the guy is legit

themmachamp, thank you for assuming the role of my reading comprehension.
