I just found out my former Judo instructor Tony Owed died. He was a great man and a great teacher. Here is his obituary. God Bless you Tony take it easy on God when you teach him Judo.

Anthony Richard Owed passed away peacefully on January 13, 2004, due to complications following a stroke. He was born October 8, 1937, to John and Lila Owed. Known as Rich to his family and old friends, his students and many others knew him as Tony. A lifelong Toledo resident and a 1955 graduate of the former DeVilbiss High School, Tony served in the Air Force from 1956 to 1960. His greatest love was the sport of Judo which he began studying at the age of 16. While in the service in Japan, he had the opportunity to study at Kodokan Judo Institute, the original school of Judo. Recognized as a serious student, Tony was invited to work out upstairs with the old masters and with the pride of Japan. He returned to Toledo as a second degree black belt and began a teaching career spanning more than forty years. He competed in tournaments nationwide and was an alternate to the 1964 Olympic Games. Tony coached his students, both men and women, to state, national and international championships. Donating his time to teach at most of the YMCAs and Boys Clubs, he was a teacher and role model to thousands of young people in the Toledo area. His name has always been synonymous with Judo. In the seventies, he started the Judo Program at the University of Toledo where he had earned his master's degree in physical education. Tony retired from the University of Toledo in 2002 where he was the facilities manager of the Health-Ed Building for 27 years. He was a highly accomplished woodworker, completing additions to his home, furniture and beautiful scale models of boats. He was recently promoted to seventh Dan (seventh degree black belt), one of the few non-Orientals to be given that rank. Well known as a tenacious competitor, his greatest accomplishment was all the students' lives he touched throughout the years. Though he never married, Tony always considered his Judo students part of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Paul Owed Sr. and nephew, Robert Berry. He is survived by sister, Theresa (Robert) Berry, brother Carl O. Owed, sister-in-law, Liane Owed; nieces, Evita (Gary) Ede, Ann (John) Engler, Liane (Bill) Lauersdorf, Theresa (Robert) Haskins, Dyan (Desi) Serna; nephews, John (Christy) Owed, Michael (Jamie) Owed and Rich Berry, 13 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew.
Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 2-9 p.m. and on Friday from 2-7 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., just west of Corey Road, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to the Anthony R.
