but we are talking a few strikes to the head, knees and punches, for MMA. Compared to 25-50 per 3min round in boxing.

Scares me when people talk about death, brain swelling is a serious serious problem, and guys do get hit damn hard repeatedly on occasion.. ie Enson/Vov Horn/Liddell.. just freaks me out because there is that sliver of possibility, I have to believe that it would be devastating to MMA in America if it happened anytime soon.

Enson wouldn't give up because of his dumbass belief that he should fight to the death if he had to. And the japanese ref wouldn't dishonor him by stopping it, or whatever. The brutality of that fight was a result of Enson and the ref, not MMA in general.
FACT: The Enson beating would have resulted in a much earlier stoppage in the UFC. And we all would have bitched about it.
FACT: MMA is much safer than boxing.

What's dangerous about boxing is that there are multiple blows to the head, much more than would be seen in any typical MMA match. Think about - if you had a person who is still recovering from the dehydration from making weight and then put him in a ring where he is going to get hit in the head dozens of times per round, is that really safe? Especially if he can't resort to clinching or takedowns, or any other method of avoiding strikes? Of course it's not. It is even worse when they have to fight 10 or 12 rounds, which is much longer than an MMA fight.
In reality, MMA is much safer. People tap when they are submitted and refs stop fights when people can't defend themselves anymore, and are much better about doing that than boxing refs are. I'd rather step in a cage for 3 rounds instead of stepping in a ring for 12.
