Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey spoke with Brett Okamoto for ESPN about her KO loss to Holly Holm at 0:59 of round 2 at UFC 193 in November 15. The fight was booked to accommodate Ronda's hectic movie schedule and to let her armbar another fighter with no ground skills. Ronda says she kept working with bro science/nutritionist Mike Dolce. He reported that she ate whatever she wanted and felt great. However, the excess energy compared to what she usually feels during a cut led her in a direction she now questions.
"The first eight minutes of all my other title defenses were easy," said Rousey, "and the first 5 minutes and change of the Holm fight weren't too hard, either." [Editor's note: Ronda's previous UFC defenses lasted a total of 7:57.] "Let's be honest, I slapped the head off Holly. Edmond told me so between rounds. Once the gas tank went, though, that was it. I drowned. She landed that one kick that rang the bell and went, '[Gasp,] I'm back.' She was close to being done. One or two more shots and she would have been wrapped up. Ask any of my Horsewomen friends, and they'll tell you."
"Swinging on gymnastic rings on fight week isn't the best thing. Usually, I wrap myself in bubble wrap and only do fight-specific things to develop my fight-specific muscles, but just because of that weight, I had put it in my head that, 'I'm free.' I had energy to burn. I was doing so much bounce footwork, the balls of my feet and my ankles were burned to a crisp. Looking back, it was ridiculous. I don't know what I was thinking, other than about having my bf's babies, that is."
