I just had a partial rotator cuff injury, last week.I stopped training and will be going on an extended vacation. How long do they take to heal up?
Mine took a year but because I kept training. Taking a break is a good idea.
The doctors say about 3 months, but that's just the time for the scar tissues to clear away and have your range of motion restored (assuming that the damage is mostly in the connective tissues instead of the muscles -- since muscles are vascular, they take about 3 - 4 weeks to heal). Anyways, the muscle and connective tissues in the injured area will still be weak after this time period.
Realistically, it would be 6 months if you do rehab and not push it too hard too soon. A rule of thumb is that for every month of rest (to heal), you'll need a month to do some resistance training (to restore strength in the injured area). You'll also need the extra time to restoring neural firing patterns -- while you are still healing, your other muscles surrounding the injured area will take over and compensate for the damaged muscle/connective tissues.
The rotator cuff is made up of four (4) muscles. Find out which one is torn then focus on strengthening the other three. Doing this will take pressure off the injured one thus allowing you to train. Also ask your doctor for an ultrasound. This will help determine if it is torn or just tendonitis. The important think to remember is to keep the shoulder moving. Some guys who sit around and rest it experience "frozen shoulder", this is when the joint locks up. You do not want this to happen. good luck!
Both my rotator cuffs are screwed and has been for a year. I have been to physio for a couple of months, it got a little better but came back again once I started training. Really you need to strengthen the muscles(resistence training) and about 4 to 5 months rest(at least). Slowly get back into it again. I find it really hard to sleep at night because of this. Good luck
I had that problem for awhile too from Kali. I went to an ART practitioner and he brought it back into shape in about 3 months. I only had to get treatment once a week and was given exercises to do independently in between sessions. Compliance with the exercises is really key to eliminating the injury. If you catch it early, you can get back to training sooner.
thanks to all those who posted to this thread.I went to second doctor last week, did some mobility exercises and found out it was just a muscle strain in my top pec, thank god.the dougness will be able to kick butt, soon.
