<p>UFC fighter purses are often lamented by the hardcore fanbase. According to Forbes, in 2013,&nbsp;On average, NBA players made $5.15 million, MLB players made $3.2 million, NHL players made $2.4 million, and NFL players made $1.9 million per year. Minimum salary in the NFL is $450,000. UFC fighters characteristically start at 10/10.</p>

10/10 means a UFC fighter gets $10,000 to show, and $10,000 more to win. The amount escalates if there is a win. In theory fighters fight three times a year, although in practice it is closer to two. Plus there is the Reebok money. And out of league sources of income. But there are also expenses. So on average, an entry level UFC fighter earns ... not a lot.

However, the lot of Women MMA fighters is tougher still. Invicta FC does everything right. They seek out sponsors. They negotiated a deal to be on UFC Fight Pass. They do incredible matchmaking. They have earned the highest profile in the field. But the reality is unsettling.

The Invicta FC 16 salaries have been released, and the highest earner was pioneer Roxanne Modafferi, who made $13,000. That is the hard reality of mixed martial arts salaries.

Ayaka Hamasaki ($6,000 + $6,000 = $12,000) beat Amber Brown ($5,000)
Jennifer Maia ($4,000 + $4,000 = $8,000) beat Vanessa Porto ($8,000)
Angela Hill ($6,000 + $6,000 = $12,000) beat Stephanie Eggink ($3,500)
Irene Aldana ($5,000 + $5,000 = $10,000) beat Jessamyn Duke ($10,000)
Roxanne Modafferi ($6,500 + $6,500 = $13,000) beat DeAnna Bennett ($5,000)
Jinh Yu Frey ($1,750 + $1,750 = $3,500) beat Herica Tiburcio ($3,500)
Sarah D'Alelio ($4,000 + $4,000 = $8,000) beat Andrea Lee ($3,000)
Aspen Ladd ($2,000 + $2,000 = $4,000) beat Kelly McGill ($2,000)
Ashley Greenway ($2,000 + $2,000 = $4,000) beat Sarah Click ($1,000)

Lack of competing promotion on the female side leads to small purses. Invicta is the biggest org for women out there and they can afford 15k at best for a win.

Hopefully Bellator takes their w divisions serious and makes and tries to take over because honestly it wouldnt be hard to do at all.

Lee fight was really good but I was dissapointed in the result. These striker girls best start getting their grappling better.

As a fan of high quality MMA,  the tiny amount of fighters that are able to train full time makes me sad.

There is no way the quality will increase decently if the base pay (even in the UFC!) isn't enough to support a fighter training full time.

That said, congrats to Roxy!    OG UG'er making good!!!!!   Finally!!!!

These fighters deserve more but there is no doubt the box office revenue cannot sustain the purses these fighters deserve - perhaps a different model is required?

Got to say I was blown away by the wages on Invicta - thing is they are the premiere female event and act as a conduit for the UFC - for that reason the salaries should be subsidised by the larger show - especially considering the Fight Pass connection and the dual contracts - that way this show (that really is niche) can be used effectively to grow the sport. There will always be great athletes - but soon many will retire without forfilling their potential because they cannot afford the sport

I think it is very short sighted by Zuffa

It's not an issue of competition. There just isn't a big market for wmma outside of the UFC. It's not like Invicta is being greedy. I'm sure without the UFC's support, the promotion would have sank by now. Phone Post 3.0

I think Invicta would have closed shop already if it wasnt for the ZUFFA handouts and the ZUFFA contract and the ZUFFA fighter-lending connection.

These few thousands ARE the handout.

Invicta cant even fill the first few rows of their shows for the main event Im sorry to see.

I do agree that is not an issue of Invicta being greedy, however it is an issue of Invicta being a promotion in life support being kept artificially alive by ZUFFA.

If a promotion that is sustainable on itself like Bellator would actively dedicate themselves to it, the salaries would be bigger due to the simple fact that the audience they attract is bigger.

And they actually compete with ZUFFA, not collaborate with them.

I understand Bellator's delicate position and why they are prioritizing other weight classes first, but Im talking from the wmma side only.

Hopefully those woman have other sources of income Phone Post 3.0
