Yeah, that dude on that episode ended up killing (or at the very least severely maiming) one of his students while he was instructing him. I think his name was Puzikas or something like that.

The physical training borders on cruel and unusual punishment. “We’d be forced to go through unbearable pain during some of these exercises,” says Vasiliev. “The trainers would bend your arm back until you started screaming. Then, as if this wasn’t enough, somebody would get a knife and start poking you with it. You were then given the choice of two extremes—having your arm broken or being cut with a knife.”

I bought a used book a long time ago written by a member of Spetsnaz. He said the Russian SF was basically put together after observing US and Allied SF units in Vietnam raising hell. The idea of US Green Berets, Aussie and UK SAS unconventional warfare groups, etc... hooking up with anti-communist forces in Eastern Europe scared the soviets shitless.
Crazy seeing how Westernized their SOF units look now...
