Dominick Cruz, Dan Henderson, BJ, Jose Aldo, GSP, Chris Weidman, Overeem, Little Nog, Chris Leben, Shane Carwin, Mark Hunt, Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz all lost at least a year out of their careers for various reasons. Condit voluntarily took 9 months off while he was champion.
Sadly 2012 indicates that MMA is on the decline. The largest org which is the biggest representative of MMA worldwide has become very deluded.
Unfortunately the way it's been marketed keeps it from being seen as the premier combat sport. Plus, by no fault of it's own, the country from which it the org operates has very poor comprehension of the sport. The rules and judging criteria are in dire need of adjustment and it really seems as though it will not be addressed anytime this decade.
In addition, to the atrocious marketing strategy and horrible governing bodies, by which it yields, zuffa has made it clear that it will choose money over legitimacy. I have no problem with smaller weight classes and wmma. In most cases they provide the much needed exciting fights. IMO using these divisions for their excitement is merely a bandaid covering a bullet wound. (Bullet wound being the rules and judging which lend themselves to creating boring fights)
The lowest weight classes and wmma are extremely thin divisions. They have no substance and yet again zuffa chooses a quick Buck over legitimacy by headlining a ppv with the weakest division in mma worldwide. They know that the "controversy" and "progressiveness" will make ppl buy. After the initial hype however there is little to no foreseeable followup.
All of this pales in comparison to their granting of a title shot at lhw to chael fucking sonnen. This was the nail in the coffin. This was the ultimate indicator that UFC has reached the point that legitimacy takes a back seat to quick money. It does make business sense. After all business is about making money but as far as mma as a whole is concerned the outlook has become very bleak. This Is the saddest thing of 2012
I predict that within the next 10yrs American mma will be an after thought. Hopefully out of the ashes a new better mma scene will emerge, one with more comprehensive rules and judging...
