Cung's wrestling is freaking sick. Did he wrestle in college at all? I heard in an interview before his debut against Brian that he was a former CA state champ... is that true?
sam's striking was horrible, especially those wild telegrpahed looping punches, like running head first into a wall.
"Cung's striking is so unconventional for most mma guys--- Even hard to simulate in training."
lol @ it being Cung's "amazing" standup that throws everyone off. Sam was throwing ridiculous haymakers from the opening bell, spinning himself wildly off-balance each time, long before Cung touched him with anything. He was exhausted from doing so in seconds. He looked like he had never been on the ground before in his life. In fact, he looked like he had never been in a fight before -- professional or otherwise.
Even as telegraphed, sloppy and gassed as he was, Sam still caught Cung on numerous occasions. Cung doesn't have great defense, his conditioning doesn't seem very good, and he seems to lack power -- despite landing at will on his bizarrely inept opponents, it takes him multiple rounds of non-stop whaling on them to get them to go down.
I think Cung would be better off focusing on grappling, since his takedowns and top control seem to be very good, much better (in my opinion) than his wildly over-rated standup.
"Cung would end up on his back and its over from that point."
LOL...when Cung and Frank trained together...Frank was on his back pretty much ever encounter. Frank can submit Cung...but there is no way in hell Frank can outwrestle Cung...much less RENZO.
I don't think Haole even saw the fight. Morgan was simply outclassed big time.
Cung won the CA Jr College state championship. In high school he placed he placed 6th in CA. He also was an all american in greco.
I'd be embarrassed to have any fan of professional sports see those punches.
Marine- Morgan knew Cungs striking was much superior. He didn't want a a technical stand up fight. He wanted a brawl where the clinch would be more likely so it would go to the ground. IMO, Morgan knew he couldn't get a KO or a clean takedown so he wanted to create a scramble to catch Cung in a sub or at least get him in his guard.
Morgan's strategy seemed to be
- either to land that one big shot that he KO'ed Ludwig with
or
- use his punches to get close, take it to the ground
Not wanting to stand and trade with Cung would actually be SMART ..... but plans fly out the window at times, especially against CUng. He DOES make people look bad...
Also, you people act like there aren't windmilling brawlers in MMA... dear lord, someone on here said Leben would beat Cung... do you really think Leben is more than a windmiller with heavy hands? Do you think he is at all technical as a striker? Do you really think he'd beat Cung standing?
That was a wizzer clinic. I know for a fact that Morgan is tough as nails and that he is pretty familiar with sidekicks. Between this and the Cuomo fight, Morgan really should go see somebody about his striking strategy. I recommend Erik Paulson, Morgan's training would fit really well with Erik's style. Yes I know that Morgan would kick my ass (Mike), but that doesn't mean I don't know anything about striking.
"people have been trying to tell the forum this for YEARS, Cung is very good and he makes people look very bad, people who looked very good in all their other fights...."
Lol @ "all their other fights." You mean the journeymen kickboxers who get lured into Shan Shou matches for the payday?

He would have been better off setting up his punches with kicks regardless (gets him to the clinch that is). That might put him on his back, but he knew from the first round that Cung wanted no part of the ground game. He could have used his longer legs and knees to keep Cung from sidekicking him. I think Sammy suffered from bad cornering...
jbapk
please try not to be ignorant. I know it's the underground and people love to sound stupid on here, but just try
Cung Ko'ed the San Da champion of CHINA. He was at the time the best guy in the country that produced San Da, which has competitions all the time and had the best fighters
Cung Ko'ed Minoro Tauro (sp?) who was a champion in Shootboxing and had like 45 Muay Thai matches in both Japan and Thailand
In Shidokan, Cung Ko'ed Arne Swindel, who is a Kyokushinkia legend with hundreds of matches
I could go on, but really you don't want the facts, you just want to keep spouting off, right?
Man that guy looked pissed drunk.Either that or he has one of the most pathetic stand up I have ever seen.
While Le standup seems pretty good, these last two matches it looks like his opponents are making it a little easy for him.
Sam Morgan looked embarrassingly bad.
Maybe the skill difference is so wide Cung makes him look bad.
Striking isn't all about athleticism, and strange things can happen between the interplay of range and movement.
Howuduren, you said it best. I was actually very impressed with Sam's fight. He went out there and swung for the fence. He very well could have landed one of those punches and then he would be hailed a hero.
Anyone who doesn't think Sam Morgan is the real deal has never rolled with him. I can remember when I first started training seriously in MMA around 4 years ago how impressed I was. The guy would just impose his will on everyone in the room. I've rolled with a lot of big names in my day, honestly he left the most lasting impression on me. You don't knock out Ludwig and armbar Reilly by accident. Sam Morgan will always have my respect.
^correct^
;)
"Also, you people act like there aren't windmilling brawlers in MMA... dear lord, someone on here said Leben would beat Cung... do you really think Leben is more than a windmiller with heavy hands?"
He's certainly more technical than that shit Sam was trying last night.
Whatever Cung's accomplishments in other sports, all I've seen from his standup in MMA are some kicks that he has to land 70 of before they seem to have any effect, and defense that has him getting repeatedly tagged by the most telegraphed punches in the history of the world.
Well said jacobdoer, and true.
